The Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) will be announcing the next steps for building owners who are non-compliant with the EPC regulation. In a recent Engineering News article, Deputy Minister Samantha Graham-Maré indicated that she will engage stakeholders in the sector to understand why compliance has been low. Latest statistics show that approximately 10,000 buildings have been registered and only 5,500 EPCs have been issued.
At BlackPeak Energy, we have successfully issued over 180 EPCs for various clients across the public and private sectors. From our experience, the low uptake of EPCs can be attributed to the following recurring challenges:
1. Lack of awareness: Building owners are still unfamiliar with the regulation and its requirements.
2. Administrative burden: Building owners often do not have the know-how or the time to register their buildings.
Since 2024, we have seen a strong focus on EPC compliance being championed by the Deputy Minister. This has already resulted in significant changes to the industry, like digitisation of EPCs through eazyEPC. Digitisation has resulted in increased quality while simultaneously improving EPC production times and security enhancements like the introduction of a QR code. To drive enforcement, we recommend leveraging digitisation with further enhancements like the QR code, which enables a quick, efficient way to authenticate certificates.
