Fun facts on International Beer Day: Did you know that our Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae consume thousands of kilos of spent brewery grains during their life cycle at Maltento, in a sustainable process that converts food industry waste into proteins for the pet feed sector?

While the beer brewing industry might view spent grain as waste, we value it as a resource that plays an integral role in our company’s business model.

In fact, we are able to divert over 500 000 kgs of this waste from local landfills - monthly - simply because our little BSFs love to eat it!

The BSF larvae that are farmed at our 7000m2 facility in the world-renowned City of Cape Town are able to transform this waste thanks to the power of insect biotechnology. What’s more, we are able to sustainably produce several other byproducts from this process as well.

The Maltento team in South Africa has partnered with BSF Breeding to continue expanding the volume of frass available for export to international clients 🌍

For those unfamiliar with the term, frass serves as a composted soil amendment product, and is recognised for its ability to enhance soil fertility, build plant immunology, promote nutrient cycling, and improve soil structure 🌱

"Our close working relationship with BSF Breeding has played a key role in establishing a successful BSF industry in South Africa, one that has grown in its reputation as a reliable supplier to an ever-expanding global insect market. The fact that we are shipping 40ft containers with frass weighing up to 16 tonnes offers a remarkable testament to the quality of our products and their impact in the global arena” shares Dominic Malan, Commercial Director at Maltento.
