Toolbox Talk #46: SAFE POWER TOOL USE

Power tools are an integral part of the majority of Southey Contracting's operations. Using them as per the manufacture's intended design is all too often something that is overlooked by operators. We get into bad habits, like removing guards and handles and dead-man switches or changing attachments without removing the plug from the power source.

⚙️ Before You Start: Inspect & Prepare
- Check the Tool: Look for frayed cords, damaged casings, missing guards, or dull blades. Tag and remove any faulty tools.
- Read the Manual and/or SOP: Know your tool's specific instructions and limitations and how to use it safely and correctly.
- Wear PPE: Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves (not for rotating tools!), and sturdy footwear are essential.
- Dress Right: Tie back long hair; avoid loose clothing or jewellery that can get caught.
Clear the Area: Remove debris, secure your footing, and keep others at a safe distance.

⚙️ While You're Working: Safe Operation
- Right Tool, Right Job: Don't force a tool; use the correct one for the task. E.g. Don’t use cutting discs as a grinding disc.
- Keep Guards On: Never remove safety guards or bypass switches.
- Secure Your Work: Use clamps or a vise to hold materials steady.
- Firm Grip & Stance: Maintain good balance and use both hands when possible.
- Mind the Cords: Keep cords away from heat, sharp edges, and tripping hazards.
- Power Off: Turn tools off and unplug them before changing accessories or leaving them unattended.

⚙️ After You Finish: Clean & Store
- Unplug & Disconnect: Always disconnect from power before cleaning or storing.
- Clean Up: Remove dust and debris from the tool and work area.
- Store Safely: Put tools away in their proper place, ready for the next use.
