TBT #45 BEAT THE HEAT: PREVENTING HEAT STRESS & STROKE

With the majority of Southey Contracting’s operations taking place in the areas where our people are exposed to the elements, especially the sun, managing the exposure to harmful UV radiation and the heat that comes with it is an on-going area of concern when coming employee health and wellbeing. We need to be careful to manage these exposures carefully with a sustainable plan in mind.

⚠️ Why It Matters (The Danger)
- Heat stress happens when your body can't cool down, leading to heat exhaustion or the deadly heat stroke.
- Heat stroke is a medical emergency that can cause permanent organ damage or death if not treated immediately.

🛡️ Prevention (Your Shield Against the Heat)
- Hydrate: Drink cool water often, at least a cup every 20 minutes, even if you're not thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and caffeine.
- Dress Smart: Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting, breathable clothing and a hat.
- Take Breaks: Rest in the shade or a cool spot frequently, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
- Acclimatize: New workers need to gradually build up to the heat over a week or two.
- Watch Out: Look out for yourself and your teammates; heat illness can sneak up on you.

As a responsible user of hydrocarbon-based products, such as fuels, paints, solvents, sealants and lubricants, Southey Contracting constantly assesses their use and consider methods to prevent spills and instil the knowledge of how to react if one occurs to protect ourselves and the environment into our teams as part of our core values.

- Safety Hazards: Hydrocarbon spillages can cause slip-and-fall injuries and can also become a fire hazard.
- Environmental Damage: Hydrocarbons spillages have the potential to cause catastrophic negative impact to soil, water sources, fauna and flora.
- Legal/Company Consequences: Spills can lead to fines, lawsuits, and costly clean-up operations.

🦺 Prevention Measures (What to do daily)
- Daily Inspections: Check vehicles, machinery, and hydraulic hoses for drips or leaks before starting work.
- Use Drip Trays: Always place drip trays under parked mobile equipment (diesel powered equipment, while mixing paints, and decanting fuels, paints, solvents and lubricants) and stored bulk storage drums.
- Secondary Containment: Store containers and drums in a bunded area (or on purpose designed spill-proof pallets) to catch any leaks.
- Secure Storage: Keep containers closed and properly labelled when not in use.
- No Spills During Transfer: Use pumps or funnels when transferring oil. Do not overfill tanks.
