Rust and corrosion on electrical conductors can cause several problems, especially in outdoor wiring, electrical panels, terminals, cable lugs, and connections.

The main effects are:

• Higher electrical resistance: Rust does not conduct electricity well. When it forms on a conductor or connection, it increases resistance and restricts current flow.
• Overheating: The increased resistance can cause the connection to heat up. A rusty or corroded terminal may become hot even when the cable itself is correctly sized.
• Voltage drop: Corroded conductors or joints can reduce the voltage reaching equipment. This may cause lights to dim, motors to struggle, or appliances to operate poorly.
• Intermittent faults: Rust can create unstable contact. Equipment may work sometimes and fail at other times, especially when vibration or movement affects the connection.
• Power loss: Severe corrosion can prevent current from passing through properly, resulting in a dead circuit or complete loss of supply.
• Damage to conductors: Corrosion can gradually reduce the thickness and strength of the metal. The conductor may eventually become weak, brittle, or break.
• Arcing and fire risk: A loose, rusty, or badly corroded connection can arc. Arcing produces very high temperatures and can damage terminals, melt insulation, or start a fire.
• Equipment damage: Motors, contactors, breakers, and electronic equipment may be affected by low voltage, overheating, or unstable electrical supply.
