How long will your steel structures remain safe and reliable?
A recent Investmech probabilistic remaining life assessment at a mine in South Africa used ultrasonic thickness measurements, corrosion modelling, and reliability engineering to evaluate the future condition of critical steel infrastructure. The study identified structures that can continue operating safely for decades, as well as high-risk areas requiring repair, replacement, or enhanced corrosion protection.
The outcome highlights the value of proactive inspections and data-driven maintenance planning. Early intervention can significantly reduce safety risks, extend asset life, and avoid costly unplanned failures.
