The OPTRON Mining team recently commissioned a Carlson C-ALS HD system at an opencast mining operation in Mpumalanga.

The rugged 3D underground laser scanning and visualization system will be used to update old underground mine plans for safe pillar extraction (mining out the remnant underground coal pillars) through opencast mining methods.

Honoured to have participated in the recent ๐Ÿ๐ง๐ ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐†๐ž๐จ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ฒ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ, hosted at the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRRD) in Pretoria.

The three-day workshop brought together key stakeholders across government, research, academia and industry to advance discussions on the future of geodesy in South Africa. Key areas included geodetic infrastructure, reference systems, data and open access, spectrum protection, human capital development, advocacy, and research and development.

A significant milestone was the official inauguration of the ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐†๐ž๐จ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ฒ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฉ (๐’๐€๐†๐–๐†), strengthening collaboration and coordination across the geodesy sector.

At a major shaft-sinking project in Limpopo, South Africa, surveyors faced extreme conditions: a 950m-deep shaft, high airflow, significant water ingress and a shaft that deviated nearly 500mm from true vertical.

Traditional plumbing-wire methods simply werenโ€™t viable.

Working with ๐Ž๐๐“๐‘๐Ž๐, ๐†๐ž๐ฅ ๐’๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฒ ๐’๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ turned to the ๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐’๐—๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐’๐œ๐š๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐“๐จ๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, using 3D scanning to establish the true shaft centre at regular intervals and provide precise reference points for steelwork installation.

The results:

โœ… Steel guides installed within a +1mm tolerance
โœ… Shaft equipping completed ahead of schedule
โœ… Reduced surveyor exposure to hazardous conditions
