1 MW Solar Plant Powers Darling Green Country Estate.
A 1 MW solar plant has been successfully commissioned at Darling Green Country Estate in Swartland Municipality, delivering clean and sustainable energy to the newly developed estate.
The project was delivered through a partnership between Sustainable Power Solutions - SPS, Darling Green Country Estate, and TouchPoint Energy, with the plant coming onstream in March. The facility is operated by the newly established green energy provider, Darling Green Utility.
West Industries Holdings was proud to be part of this landmark renewable energy project. Our scope of work included the safe offloading and handling of all construction materials delivered to site, ensuring smooth and secure logistics throughout the project. In addition, we completed essential construction work, including the installation of an underground water pipeline to address water accumulation on site, enabling uninterrupted access for construction vehicles and improving overall site efficiency.
We also constructed the solar farm access road and completed the fire breaks along the boundary fence surrounding Darling Green Country Estate.
A portion of the surplus energy generated by the plant will be sold to the Swartland Municipality under a three-year power purchase agreement (PPA). As the estate continues to expand, it is expected that most of the generated energy will be consumed internally by residents.
SPS was appointed as a one-stop solution provider, responsible for both the technical implementation and funding of the project. TouchPoint Energy (formerly Genesis) contributed during the early stages through project conceptualisation, design, and legal documentation.
The Darling Green Solar Project offers added resilience by protecting residents from Eskom load shedding during stages 1 and 2.
Looking ahead, plans are underway for the development of an additional 5 MW solar farm adjacent to the existing plant. Approval has been secured to access the Eskom grid in Darling, allowing for the wheeling of up to 5 MW of power to customers connected to the Eskom grid across the country.
Currently in its final design phase and subject to Eskom approval, the 5 MW project is expected to be commissioned by mid-year. SPS, in collaboration with Darling Green Utility, will oversee the distribution of this renewable energy, with long-term plans to expand the grid to supply power to the entire town of Darling.
