Time is one of the most valuable commodities in asset management, and too often, it's lost. When a vessel is in transit, most operators treat that time as downtime.

Every project at APEX AIS begins with a Toolbox Talk. Before a single tool is lifted or a rope is rigged, the team comes together, whether onshore or offshore, and in all conditions, to align on the risks specific to the day’s scope, review the method statements, and raise any concerns.

Within that circle, there is no hierarchy. The voice of a junior technician carries the same importance as that of a senior inspector. Experience has shown that the most critical safety tool is not found in any manual, but in the willingness to speak up, supported by a culture that values and encourages it.

Ultimately, culture is not defined by what is written in procedures, but by what happens on the deck each day.

A Day in the Life: Rope Access Specialist Q&A

At APEX AIS, every inspection at height starts long before the ropes are rigged. It starts with preparation, precision, and people who live and breathe safety.

We sat down with Dean Britz, one of our Rope Access Specialists, to learn what it takes to deliver asset excellence hundreds of feet above the ocean.

Q1: What’s the first thing you do before a climb?

Before any climb, I start with a thorough pre-use equipment inspection and a risk assessment of the work area. Ensuring that all gear is compliant, properly fitted, and that the environment is safe sets the foundation for a controlled and efficient rope access operation.

Q2: What’s the biggest challenge of working at height?

The biggest challenge is maintaining consistent situational awareness. Working at height demands complete focus, especially when conditions change, such as weather, site activity, or equipment limitations. Staying ahead of potential hazards is key to safe ex*****on.
