Term of the Week: FPSO and FSO

These two acronyms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe different vessel types with distinct integrity challenges.

An FSO, or Floating Storage and Offloading unit, stores produced oil and transfers it to shuttle tankers.

An FPSO, or Floating Production, Storage and Offloading unit, also incorporates processing facilities that separate oil, gas, and water before the oil is stored and offloaded.

These production facilities significantly change the integrity profile, adding process piping, pressure systems, equipment, and hazardous areas to the hull and marine systems shared by both vessel types.

This year, Dean marks 2 years with APEX AIS, a milestone that deserves more than a passing mention.

Since joining us in April 2024, Dean has taken on the responsibility of Project Coordinator while also serving as our IRATA Technical Authority.

As an active IRATA Level 3 Supervisor, Dean continues to lead from the front across a range of offshore scopes. Most recently, he supported a fabric maintenance project onboard an offshore MODU, which included the repainting of the accommodation areas and offshore cranes.

Experience compounds in this industry. Every year a technician, supervisor, or coordinator remains part of a team, that team benefits from sharper judgement, stronger technical knowledge, and a deeper understanding of how to work efficiently without ever compromising safety or quality.

Term of the Week: The Method Statement: the document that turns a scope of work into a plan.

A method statement sets out how a task will actually be executed: the sequence of work, the equipment, the people and competencies involved, and the controls that manage each identified risk. Read alongside the risk assessment, it shows a client exactly what will happen on their asset before anyone leaves the ground.

Every rope access operation we undertake includes an effective on-site rescue capability.

In accordance with the IRATA International Code of Practice, reasonably foreseeable rescue scenarios are considered before work begins. A site-specific rescue plan is established, with appropriately trained personnel and suitable equipment in place to enable a rapid response.

External emergency services may support the wider emergency arrangements, but the immediate recovery of a suspended technician cannot depend solely on their arrival.

Clients will rarely see this capability put into action, and that is precisely the goal.

The best rescue provision is the one that stands ready on every shift and never needs to be used.

Term of the Week: UWILD (Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Drydocking)

Every classed vessel or floating offshore asset is required to undergo periodic hull surveys to verify its structural integrity and continued compliance with Class requirements. A UWILD, or Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Drydocking, allows certain Class surveys to be carried out while the asset remains afloat, subject to approval by the relevant Classification Society and provided all applicable survey requirements are met.

For many FPSOs, FSOs, semi-submersibles and other permanently or long-term moored offshore assets, a UWILD can significantly reduce operational disruption by avoiding the time, cost and logistical challenges associated with drydocking. In some cases, it is the most practical way to maintain Class compliance while keeping the asset in service.

APEX AIS provides topside support for UWILD programmes through comprehensive structural integrity inspections, including General Visual Inspection (GVI), Close Visual Inspection (CVI) and a range of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods on critical structural components.

Inspection scopes typically include, where applicable, jack-up legs and chords, leg guides and jacking systems, preload tanks and associated hull structure, leg well structures, as well as the main hull and deck structures.

The underwater inspection scope is performed by an appropriately qualified and certified commercial diving contractor in accordance with the applicable Class requirements. Working collaboratively, this integrated approach provides owners and Classification Societies with a comprehensive assessment of the asset's structural condition, both above and below the waterline.

A successful UWILD is not simply about inspecting steel beneath the waterline. It is about providing the evidence that owners, operators and Classification Societies need to make informed decisions about the continued integrity of the asset.
