It's been mostly dry this week, so now's a good time to have a look at your roof before the storms arrive.

Every storm season our guys see the same small things turn into big problems: blocked gutters, a few slipped tiles, flashing that's lifted around a geyser. It all seems fine until the first proper downpour, and then there's a wet patch on the ceiling.

Five things worth checking now:
1. Gutters and downpipes. Clear out the leaves so the water can actually get away.
2. Tiles. Look for any that are cracked, slipped or lifted.
3. Flashing. Check where the roof meets chimneys, geysers and walls.
4. IBR and metal roofs. Look for rusty or loose screws.
5. Trees. Cut back branches that touch or hang over the roof.

Please don't climb onto the roof if it isn't safe. You can spot a lot from the ground, or with a torch in the roof space.

💧 Damp isn’t simply a paint problem.

Peeling paint, dark patches, mould, musty smells and powdery white deposits are all warning signs that moisture may be present in the wall.

Simply scraping and repainting the damaged area may temporarily hide the problem but if the source of the moisture isn’t identified and repaired, the damage will return.

A proper damp assessment should determine:

• Where the moisture is coming from
• Whether it’s caused by water ingress, plumbing, rising damp or condensation
• The moisture level within the affected surface
• Which repairs and treatment system are required
• Whether the wall is sufficiently dry before repainting

Treat the source, not just the stain.

5 questions to ask before appointing a painting contractor

A painting quotation should cover far more than the colour and price. Before appointing a contractor, ask:

1. Are they insured and compliant?
2. Is the preparation work clearly specified?
3. Which primer, paint system and number of coats will be used?
4. Can they provide recent, relevant references?
5. What product and workmanship guarantees are offered?

The quality of a paint job is determined long before the final coat goes onto the wall. Proper assessment, moisture testing, surface preparation and the correct paint system all play a major role in achieving a finish that lasts.
