The electricity minister is optimistic about ending load shedding as the outlook for power generation has improved greatly. If all things were back to normal, we could all celebrate a little bit, but with the Western Cape still struggling to get electricity back to all areas, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. We should not complain too much as we could at least watch the rugby in peace over the weekend.

Five days after the storm hit our area and we are still feeling the repercussions! Hermanus is still without water and many of the outlying areas have been without power for days. Not to mention damage to roads in the area and province. Some fed up citizens have just decided enough is enough and are in the process of getting backup power systems to relieve some of the headaches. Let us know if you require a quote or site inspection for a system at your house.

Eskom has reduced the load shedding forecast and stages due to replenishing emergency reserves. This basically means they have bought diesel to burn and generate some electricity. Not really a comforting outcome as they can run out at any point and we will be back to the higher stages of load shedding.

We have been plunged back into the darkness that is stage 6 load shedding. Ten to twelve hours of planned power vcuts per day until further notice. More generting units breaking down is to blame for the latest disaster and we have to bear the burden again. Time to start thinking about an alternative power plan seriously again. According to this article we are at stage 5 but this is already outdated as we have been moved to stage 6 again. Power will be off from 16:00 - 20:30 tonight with anything possible after that. If stage 6 persists until tomorrow we will have no power for at least 8 hours.

Apparently we might be getting some relief over the weekend but knowing Eskom I would not bet on it. It seems the moment you let your guard down they leave you to fend for yourself in the dark.
Better to be prepared with a backup power solution of your own.

South Africans have imported power equipment to the value of 48 billion rand in the first half of 2023. That absolutely dwarfs the total spend of 32 billion for the entire 2022. With load shedding back to the awful stages of more than half the day without power we are left with no choice but to try and make a plan for ourselves.

We have had some mild relief from load shedding with the lower stages, unfortunately this has been moved up to the higher stages again after generating units broke down again. This is actually a good time to invest in a backup power plan as demand is quite low and prices have been slashed to entice people a bit. Contact us for a quote to see what the prices are like.

Load limiting just seems like the better way of doing things with our current energy crisis. In stead of leaving households in complete darkness, Eskom will limit each residence to a maximum of 10A draw from the grid. This is ample for lights, tv and a couple of device chargers. Anyone who does not comply will be cut off entirely for the remainder of that load shedding cycle. Trial runs has yielded positive results and I for one am hoping we get this sooner rather than later. Until then we will have to endure the load shedding monster some more, like tonight at 18:00 again.

Economist Dawie Roodt is predicting that Eskom will follow a similar route to SAA and the South African Post Office in dying slow deaths. According to him the generating and distribution side of Eskom has already failed and ultimately only the transmission side of the business will survive. Adding to the woes is the fact that Eskom owes R420 billion and is unable to pay with government willing to take on about R150 billion of that amount. He predicts that ultimately the failing services will be taken over by the private sector as we have seen with SAPO and SAA. Full article on mybroadband.co.za

On top of our regular woes with load shedding, there are also other factors contributing to the madness. Two areas specifically have issues that make matters worse namely the Cape Metropole and Centurion. It seems illegal connections are overloading the grid and a huge backlog of faults that need attention at Eskom are causing the delays in getting power to households in these areas. And here we thought load shedding by itself was a nightmare!
