Engineers at the University of Illinois have 3D-printed pure copper liquid-cooling plates with microscopic branching fins thinner than a human hair, achieving 32 percent lower heat resistance than any conventional design. The plates are so efficient that a data centre currently using 550 megawatts just for cooling could drop that to 11 megawatts. The process works at room temperature using recyclable water-based materials and maintains 99.95 percent copper purity. Scientists say it could solve one of the biggest energy problems slowing down AI infrastructure growth worldwide.
