International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week | 18–24 October 2026 🎨

This year’s theme, “From Detection to Prevention”, highlights the importance of taking action to eliminate lead exposure, including the risks associated with lead in paint.

In South Africa, regulations limit lead content in paints and coatings to 90 parts per million (ppm) or less, applying to both decorative and industrial products. But prevention goes beyond simply meeting the legal limit. It means ensuring that finished paint products are properly tested, accurately labelled and compliant before reaching consumers.

With the updated regulations now in effect, manufacturers, suppliers and retailers all have a role to play in creating a safer, more responsible coatings industry. At SAPMA, we remain committed to raising awareness, supporting industry compliance and working towards a future where lead exposure from paint is prevented.
