As the South African coatings industry continues to grow, compliance, sustainability and innovation remain critical to its future.

Through the Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP), SAPMA is helping drive awareness of South Africa's lead-in-paint regulations and supporting industry compliance initiatives that contribute to safer products and healthier communities.

One important reminder: all compliant paint products must carry the statement:
"Complies with the South African legal lead limit of 90ppm or less."

With SAPMA as the Supporting Association, and LEEP as the Sustainability Partner of Coatings For Africa 2026, we look forward to joining manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and industry professionals as they come together to shape the future of coatings in Southern Africa.

As of May 2026, all paint labels should now comply with the updated South African lead paint regulations.

While the regulations are officially in effect, many manufacturers, suppliers and retailers still have questions around compliance, testing requirements, imports, reformulation support and what the legislation means in practice.

Education and industry collaboration remain critical to helping businesses navigate these changes correctly and responsibly. Organisations such as SAPMA and LEEP continue to play an important role in supporting the industry through this transition.
