Marikana Agri Hub: Turning Skills into Sustainable Impact

Grown at the MDA Agri Hub in Marikana through hands-on training and structured production support.
Recently harvested spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, chillies, and green peppers reflect the success of a model translating skills into consistent, high-quality food production.

Produce is sold into local markets while also supplying 15 Early Childhood Development Centres in Marikana, putting fresh, nutritious food on the plates of young children and supporting livelihoods.

A clear example of development in action.

Easter reminds us that renewal is possible.

But in the communities we serve, renewal is not symbolic. It is hard, daily work. It looks like rebuilding livelihoods, restoring dignity, and creating opportunity where there was very little.

Hope, on its own, is not enough. It must be matched with action.

At the Mineworkers Development Agency, that is the work we commit to every day. Walking alongside individuals and communities as they rebuild, not just for today, but for a more sustainable future.

As we pause this Easter, we reflect on the progress made, the work still ahead, and the responsibility we carry to continue showing up with purpose.

Wishing you a meaningful and reflective Easter.

Proud moment for sustainable livelihoods and community empowerment in the Northern Cape 🐝🌱

On 20 February 2026, the Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA), in partnership with Siyancuma Local Municipality, officially handed over:

✅ 280 Beehives
✅ 20 sets of Personal Protective Equipment
✅ 20 Bee Smokers
✅ 20 Bee Brushes
✅ Training Certificates

to emerging beekeepers in Campbell, Northern Cape.

This initiative forms part of MDA’s national Beekeeping & Honey Production Programme, which has already distributed over 7,000 beehives to farmers across South Africa — driving enterprise development, food security, and sustainable income generation.

The session was attended by the Mayor and Speaker of Siyancuma Local Municipality, Councillors Mcklein and George.

A special note of appreciation to the Municipality for availing four farms to the community for honey production and committing to an offtake agreement to procure all honey produced by the farmers through MDA.

Partnerships that create impact. Empowering communities, one hive at a time. 🍯✨

MINEWORKERS DEVELOPMENT AGENCY EXPANDS NATIONAL BEEKEEPING PROGRAMME WITH NORTHERN CAPE DISTRIBUTION

The Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA) is proud to announce the continued expansion of its national beekeeping programme, which has successfully distributed more than 7,000 beehives across South Africa over the past three years. This initiative forms part of the Agency’s broader strategy to reach 20,000 beehives by 2028, empowering communities through sustainable agricultural development and enterprise creation.

As part of this ongoing rollout, the MDA will conduct its first beehive distribution in partnership with Siyancuma Local Municipality in the Northern Cape on 20 February 2026. This milestone marks an important step in extending opportunities to emerging beekeepers in rural and mining-affected communities within the province.

Beekeeping plays a critical role in strengthening South Africa’s food security by supporting pollination, biodiversity, and agricultural productivity. Through this programme, the MDA is not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also creating access to a growing and lucrative industry for aspiring beekeepers.

The initiative aims to equip beneficiaries with the resources and opportunities needed to participate meaningfully in the honey value chain, while promoting the production and consumption of natural, locally sourced raw honey. By supporting emerging beekeepers, the Agency is helping build sustainable livelihoods and encouraging South Africans to support homegrown agricultural products.

The Mineworkers Development Agency remains committed to driving inclusive economic participation through its agricultural hubs and community development programmes, ensuring that beekeeping becomes a viable source of income and long-term economic empowerment.
