How Eskom managed to tame load shedding

The incredible shift from Stage 6 load shedding to Stage 3, potentially even lower, was arguably always predictable.

Just weeks ago, the country was on edge, anticipating Stage 8 – or worse – load shedding during the winter months. This will likely not come to pass.

Has City Power been imposing much more load shedding than required?

Johannesburg power utility City Power is promising to reconfigure its distribution network to exclude essential services as well as many businesses from load shedding as part of a seemingly ambitious plan to reduce the impact of Eskom’s supply deficit on residents.

City Power further promises to reduce the number of hours residents are in the dark by implementing a new schedule that will limit the period without electricity to two hours at a time (plus 30 minutes for the switchover) and a total of no more than 12 hours per day up to Stage 8 load shedding.

: Eskom hopes to recover 6,000MW in the next 2 years, says Cassim

Speaking during the opening session of the Enlit Africa conference and expo in Cape Town on Tuesday, 16 May, acting group chief executive of Eskom Calib Cassim said the utility's executive management has agreed to assist generation "to the best of our ability to minimise the impact of load shedding this winter."

Index shows green-certified office buildings offer better return on investment
The Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) South Africa Green Annual Property Index for 2022 has shown that green-certified prime and A-grade offices produced an improved total return last year and outperformed noncertified office assets of a similar quality by 50 basis points during the year.

Released yearly since 2016, in conjunction with the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) and sponsored by JSE-listed Growthpoint Properties, the index provides an independent, globally consistent view on the investment performance of green-certified and noncertified offices.

Sector stays sturdy despite challenges

The stainless steel sector remains steadfast in its resilience, and is even more determined to fight for its well-deserved place in growing the South African economy, says Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (Sassda) executive director Michel Basson.

South Africa’s new grid company could be operational by mid-year if license and lender conditions are met

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has hosted public hearings into an application by the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTC) for the three licences it requires to begin operating as an independent subsidiary of Eskom Holdings, in line with the unbundling “journey” first outlined by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) in 2019.

The vertical separation of the grid company from Eskom is seen as a crucial step for levelling the playing field between Eskom Generation and independent power producers (IPPs), as well as for ensuring that sufficient transmission assets are funded and built to facilitate new generation investment.
