This year’s World Environment Day focuses on climate action. Sappi champions a holistic approach to climate action across our global operations, recognising that it can never be an isolated effort. It’s deeply intertwined with how we preserve ecosystem services, protect biodiversity, use resources efficiently, reduce waste, and ensure social inclusion & capacity building that enables a just transition.

This is evinced by our 4 Ps sustainability framework: Principles, Prosperity, People, and Planet. Our greatest material impacts & opportunities lie at the nexus of forests, water, energy, and communities.

So it’s not just about emissions reductions for us; we also focus heavily on tackling the risks & effects of climate change on our forests & communities.

One bold vision vs one hundred obstacles – the Eden Project is a testament to how vision, determination and teamwork can make the impossible possible. And how the incredible idea of one man (Eden Project Co-Founder Tim Smit) inspired the best in others.

Ushering Eden into reality would be no small feat, but Tim refused to be bogged down by bureaucracy.

It’s a tale of what’s possible when people work together in the service of nature – and a shared dream.

Sappi is excited to announce today the signing of binding agreements with UPM - a material solutions company to form a proposed independent 50/50 joint venture company in Graphic Paper.

The proposed joint venture would bring together Sappi’s European Graphic Paper business with UPM’s Communication Papers business in Europe, the UK and the US combining strong assets, expertise and people to create a more focused and resilient business for the future.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory and other approvals, including shareholder approval, with final resolutions expected by the end of 2026.

As Sappi CEO Steve Binnie noted, this proposed partnership has the potential to help secure a long-term, profitable future for the European business, while continuing to support customers and protect the European manufacturing base.

On World Biodiversity Day, Sappi Southern Africa is sharing how our forestry landscapes are managed not only for production, but for ecosystem resilience, species protection and restoration at scale. Around a third of our land is set aside specifically for natural biodiversity management, while our planted landscapes are responsibly managed to support a high diversity of species alongside commercial forestry. From conserving natural habitats and restoring wetlands, to protecting rare species and measuring biodiversity outcomes, these efforts reflect a commitment to working with nature.

Swipe through to explore what biodiversity stewardship looks like in practice — and how nature positive action can deliver impact for both people and planet.

Sappi is honoured to be featured in ABB’s latest industry paper – Resourcing our future. It highlights water management, sustainable forestry, and the potential to create fibre-based renewable alternatives by making full use of the entire tree & its side streams.

Tracy Wessels, Group Head of Sustainability and Investor Relations at Sappi, discusses how Sappi continues to develop new ways to use side streams from the pulping process, thereby creating renewable alternatives to fossil-based inputs in downstream value chains and transforming traditionally fossil-based value chains. There is also a video showcasing Sappi’s ongoing collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund in South Africa’s uMkhomazi catchment to safeguard long-term water security and protect our shared water resources. Don’t hesitate to let us know your thoughts and insights on the paper.

Simone Singh was always awe-struck by bridges, interchanges & complex road networks when she went on roadtrips as a child.

This curiosity grew into a desire to make a difference; to leave something behind that would endure.

STEM enables her to create structures & systems that last.
