CM Solutions has always believed that maintaining in-house analytical capabilities deepens our understanding of sample characteristics and accelerates method development. This enables us to deliver reliable data with fast turnaround for our clients.

CM Solutions has expanded its metallurgical service offering with the acquisition of an Agilent 7850 ICP-MS. The instrument provides high-speed, multi-element detection at parts-per-billion levels, supporting projects involving PGMs, rare earth elements, and low-grade ores in complex matrices.

The ICP-MS complements our existing ICP-OES capability by extending detection limits and interference rejection, while maintaining high analytical throughput. Together, these systems allow CM Solutions to efficiently analyse both routine samples and challenging matrices requiring ultra-low detection limits.

“With these capabilities, CM Solutions has enhanced its service offering to support clients requiring state-of-the-art analysis on challenging samples,” says Ben Knights, CEO. “This expansion comes at a crucial stage in our test work programme for Podium Minerals Limited, where the enhanced interference rejection capabilities of ICP-MS are critical for accurate PGM analysis to support the development of their metallurgical process.”

CM Solutions and Cycad Process will be exhibiting at IMPC 2026 in Cape Town from 18–22 October.

Hosted by the SAIMM - The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, IMPC is one of the world’s leading forums for mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, bringing together industry, research, and technology to promote best practice across the value chain.

CM Solutions will share the stand with Cycad Process®, a cutting-edge simulation software package developed in-house to augment the efficiency of our consultancy division. Visitors will be able to see firsthand how they, too, can design and optimise their operations with this easy-to-use metallurgical tool.

2026 was noticeably more active and energetic than in previous years, a definite sign that the mining industry is enjoying a growth spurt 😊

“This global event is a good opportunity for us to catch up with clients we don't often get to see face-to-face and to understand their challenges better, “says Ben Knights, CM Solutions CEO.” With strong metal prices and demand in the renewables and AI data centre sectors showing no sign of slowing down, we have come away feeling confident about a positive-looking future for mining and mineral processing.”

Our CM Solutions Exec team was run off their feet trying to fit in as many appointments as possible. Here, Ben and Frank Crundwell are seen catching up with Simon Purkiss and Colin Hunter from Consolidated Mining and Investments at the Impact Capital Africa Event, where Kumba Ore announced a generous investment package to support African SMEs; Keith Saffy from Ntsimbintle; Darren Naylor and James Smith from DRA Global and Jenni Sweet from Mining3.

We’ve officially kicked off in Cape Town.

The weekend set the tone for an exciting week ahead, with a full calendar of social events bringing together African and global mining leaders. This included the exclusive Mine, Wine and Dine Gala event on Saturday evening, celebrating achievement across the continent’s value chain, followed by GCR Group’s Open House on Sunday.

We look forward to a week of catching up with clients and contacts from around the world and to gaining up-to-date perspectives on our industry’s pain points and opportunities.

to Frank Crundwell enjoying a compelling discussion on the characterisation and processing of black mass with Tom Bower and Dr Laurance Donnelly at the "Understanding your Mineral Deposit" meeting at The Geological Society in London, February 2024.

As the EV and renewable energy markets rapidly expand, demand for battery metals is outpacing new mine development. Black mass provides a faster, lower-carbon, and more sustainable supply of critical minerals. This reduces reliance on geopolitically sensitive sources and supports circular-economy goals, benefiting the environment and helping companies meet their ESG commitments.

The current copper shortage, exacerbated by the availability of more complex, low-grade ores, is driving the need for new processing options that make both economic and environmental sense.

At , our CEO Ben Knights presented a paper titled “Technologies and Processes for Economical Recovery of Cu from Challenging Resources,” which showcased how CM Solutions works with clients to provide viable alternatives to copper recovery with the application of cutting-edge processing technologies.

The paper explores how traditional methods, such as pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes using sulfuric acid, face challenges like high gangue acid consumption and complex mineralogy. The paper highlights the need for new processing options to economically address these issues, including the use of alternative lixiviants like ammonia and glycine, which offer selective leaching and potentially lower environmental impacts. The presentation also introduced a novel technology – “Fines Optimised Heap Leaching” (FOHL). This technology allows high rates of leaching of fines, in a heap-style of bulk leach. Heap leaching of fines opens opportunities for pre-concentration steps such as flotation, gravity or magnetic separation.

These technologies are still under development, and CM Solutions is committed to contributing its efforts to securing a sustainable supply of Cu to meet future global needs.

Our Story

We started in 2002 as a consulting practice in extractive metallurgical providing front-end engineering design and optimization services. In 2013 we opened a metallurgical laboratory to support this work. Both the consulting practice and laboratory have thrived by working together as a single team.

We have worked in copper, cobalt, nickel, platinum-group metals, zinc, lead, and many other metals. Our clients include Anglo American, Lonmin Platinum, Impala Platinum, First Quantum Minerals (Kansanshi), ERG Africa (Boss Mining, Chambishi Metals, Metalkol), Hatch, Bateman, Worley Parsons, SNC Lavalin, and many, many more.

The consulting practice has done due diligence work, contributed to NI 43-101 reports, and performed technical audits, forensic investigations, and optimization studies.

The laboratory work covers the physical processes, such as crushing, grinding, gravity separation, flotation and classification, and the hydrometallurgical processes, such as leaching, precipitation, solvent extraction and electrowinning. We have integrated our analytical services into our team approach towards laboratory projects.
