World Wetlands Day - 2 February 2026

World Wetlands Day awareness campaign is organised by the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands.

Contracting Parties of the Convention on Wetlands have been celebrating World Wetlands Day since 1997, when it was first established.

The theme for 2026 is "Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage”. The campaign focuses on the role of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems and preserving cultural identity.

Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, and we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests. Yet, wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, and world economies.

It is important that national and global awareness is raised about wetlands to reverse their rapid loss and encourage actions to conserve and restore them.

Interesting facts:

• Wetlands are vital allies in the fight against climate change and disaster risk.

• Cultural knowledge of wetlands constitutes a collective legacy for today’s societies.

• Wetlands are crucial for water security.

• Indigenous stewardship of wetlands is essential to the future of these life-sustaining ecosystems.

• These productive ecosystems are important local sources for job creation.

World Wetlands Day is the ideal time to increase people’s understanding of these important ecosystems.

It's Day 2 at B20 South Africa where the focus is 'Africa and the Global South in Global Trade.'

The Global South is shaping the world’s next wave of growth through accessible and affordable innovation that will drive access to digital connectivity, stable electrification, water and sanitation, and key infrastructure. For CAIA, we recognise that investment must follow opportunity, not outdated perceptions.

South Africa’s chemical sector is a central part of that story.

World Energy Saving Day - 21 October 2025

21 October was declared World Energy Saving Day in 2012 at the World Energy forum in Dubai.

The observance raises awareness of the use of natural resources to produce energy - electricity, gas, and water - and the impact of energy consumption on the environment.

Saving energy, or energy efficiency means using less energy to do a specific task, which can contribute to reducing your carbon footprint.

The day aims at drawing attention to the need for creating, implementing, and promoting policies aimed at energy efficiency and the conservation of different natural resources.

Measures to promote energy savings:

• Temperature control
By Lowering a thermostat by just one degree could reduce heating energy consumption by about 7%.

• Repair before replacing
To repair appliances makes it easier to fix products rather than replace them. This not only prolongs products’ lives but also reduces waste.

• Saving energy on the move
Options include carpooling, as many of these trips are made by just one person, or using public transport.

World Energy Saving Day focuses on the importance of small, everyday actions that can have a considerable impact if taken up on a large scale.

World Food Day - 16 October 2025

Throughout October, hundreds of events and initiatives will bring this message to life. Each one a reminder that food is not only a resource. It is a foundation - for peace, dignity, for a future shared more equally. The right to food is a basic human right.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day campaign is “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”.

The theme reflects the urgency and promises of collective action. Agrifood systems cannot change in isolation. Progress depends on what can be done together across institutions, borders, and within communities.

The United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, guided by collective vision of:

• better nutrition
• better production
• better environment
• better life

Leaving no one behind, we must all answer the call for innovative means and strategic collaboration to combat, hunger and malnutrition. If we want to transform agrifood systems, the challenges of today must be addressed and turned into opportunities for all, for a better tomorrow.

National Transport Month 1 -31 October 2025

National Transport Month was first launched in October 2005. It seeks to raise awareness of the important role of transport in the economy, and to invite participation from civic society and business, in providing a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system for the country.

An effective transport system is vital to the way of life, connecting people with jobs, schools, shops, friends, and family.

Inadequate transport infrastructure is a severe growth constraint to a country’s social and economic development.

The Department of Transport has intensified efforts to develop and improve South Africa’s transport system to serve as a catalyst for social and economic development.

An effective transport system is vital for the economic and social fabric of South Africa, and it is a contributing factor for positioning the country as an attractive investment destination.

An integrated transport and road network is key to attracting investment into the country and the continent.

Recent achievements are the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and launch of Business Express trains to ease congestion in Gauteng.

Focus over the next year will predominantly be on:
• maintaining road infrastructure.
• upgrading the rail infrastructure and services.
