The Circular Economy Summit 2026 closed today at the University of Limpopo. The four commissions reported back on waste infrastructure, funding, research and municipal services. The work behind their recommendations carries on in laboratories across the country, and BICS will keep supporting it.

Ms Bernice Swarts, Deputy Minister of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), visited the BICS stand on Day 2 of the Circular Economy Summit.

The summit’s commissions cover waste infrastructure, funding, research, and municipal services. Our conversation with the Deputy Minister focused on the laboratory work that sits behind all four and where BICS fits as a laboratory solutions partner. Having that conversation directly with the Department’s leadership is a large part of why we keep coming back.

She also left with a slushy, which was the right call in the Limpopo heat.

Much of the evidence behind South Africa’s circular economy comes out of a laboratory. A water sample from a river catchment or a contaminant test on treated effluent has to be measured accurately before it can inform a waste licence, a municipal plan or a national policy.

That is why BICS continues to partner with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), on the Circular Economy Summit, this year at the University of Limpopo’s Turfloop Campus.

As a laboratory solutions partner, we supply the instruments, consumables, chemicals and calibration that researchers and environmental laboratories rely on. When their results shape decisions on licensing, extended producer responsibility and municipal compliance, accuracy at the bench becomes a public responsibility. We take our part in that seriously.

As Heritage Month comes to a close, we're doing something a little different on this page.

We're settling into our new offices, and the walls needed art. We wanted to celebrate South African talent, so we looked close to home.

The first two paintings to go up are by Kenosi Malebye, a painter who spends his working days as a pastry chef in Les Créatifs at Bryanston.

Pastry is the branch of cooking that behaves like a laboratory method. Ratios hold or the structure collapses. Temperature is a specification. The same batch should come out on Tuesday exactly as it did on Friday. Then Kenosi goes home and paints, where he sets the rules himself.

An artist whose day job runs on precision felt like the right start for a lab company's new home. Proudly South African work, on proudly South African walls.

Shutdown work gets scoped in August. Scoping it in November is too late.

Continuous plants set shutdown dates years ahead. Calibration, equipment replacement, and any refurbishment that takes a facility offline either happen within that window or are deferred for a year. Calibration runs in days. Equipment with longer lead times must be specified well before the window opens.

Four working months remain in 2026: enough to assess a laboratory, agree on a scope, order against it, and hand over inside the window. By October it stops being enough.
