On the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the women shaping the future of STEM, redefining how science serves both people and the planet.

At Sappi Southern Africa, science drives innovation in a sector where ecology meets engineering, where understanding forests and ecosystems combines with technology to design sustainable solutions. Where the hidden chemistry of trees unlocks uses far beyond paper, from renewable textiles and pharmaceuticals to foodstuffs and packaging. It is a sector that shows how natural science and applied engineering can work together to create climate-resilient landscapes and everyday products with global impact.

Science thrives on diversity, and women bring resilience, precision, innovation, and empathy to the table. These qualities ensure that STEM careers aren’t only about equations, they’re about shaping a future where communities and nature flourish together.

As Dr. Bev Sukhdeo, VP Manufacturing and Engineering for Sappi SA says: “In our industry, science offers young women pathways that are both practical and profound - the opportunity to build local resilience while contributing to global goals.”

As the first quarter of the year unfolds, the focus remains on maintaining operational stability and efficiency while navigating ongoing pricing and exchange rate pressures.

Supported by strong demand for dissolving wood pulp and healthy domestic containerboard markets, disciplined ex*****on and cost control continue to underpin the region’s approach to long-term value creation.

Sappi Southern Africa CEO Graeme Wild outlines how these priorities are shaping the region’s direction.

Developing Tomorrow's Senior Leaders

At Sappi our Leadx Leadership Development programme inspires the next generation of operational lead teams. We help our talent to gain a deep, end-to-end vision needed for long-term decision making and a sustainable business.

As part of their learning experience, our leaders completed an intensive week-long contact session, putting down roots where it matters:

• Thinking Seasons Ahead: They walked the full forest value chain-from the Clan Nursery and Plantation to Forestry research, understanding the science and long-term vision behind our sustainable forests.
• Connecting with Community: A visit to the Saiccor Skills Centre demonstrated how our success translates into providing opportunities for communities and employees, grounding our leadership in purpose.
• Mastering the Full Cycle: From the woodyard to the bailing line at the Saiccor Mill, they saw how we strive to use every part of the tree to create sustainable products.
• Investing in the Human Element: They gained crucial skills in cultural etiquette and conversational intelligence, recognizing that technology and processes are only as effective as the people who lead them.

We believe in long-term sustained development. This effort is about more than just upskilling; it's about investing the right resources to ensure our motivated, self-driven people are equipped to succeed senior management and drive our purpose for generations to come.

Sappi invests in Mpumalanga!

At the 2025 Mpumalanga Investment and Mining Conference, our CEO, Graeme Wild, shared how Sappi continues to unlock the power of renewable resources to benefit people, communities, and contribute towards a sustainable future:

• Economic Impact: Our operations in Mpumalanga employ more than 7,200 people, and since 2014 we’ve invested over R10.2 billion in the province. We are proud to announce a further R5.1 billion investment over the next five years.
• Community Empowerment: We’ve supported 985 small timber growers, distributed 25 million seedlings, and invested R76 million in Skills Centres since 2018 — creating opportunities that strengthen rural economies.
• Sustainability & Innovation: From dissolving wood pulp used in textiles, hygiene, and pharmaceuticals, to packaging that supports the growth of South Africa’s citrus exports — our renewable products are helping fuel circular economies.
• Social & Environmental Impact: Our CSI spend since 2018 totals R367 million, and our Pepper Bark conservation project has empowered over 200 traditional healers and reintroduced 200,000 trees into local communities.

Sappi’s Mpumalanga operations not only create essential products — from textiles and hygiene solutions to packaging that supports South Africa’s growing citrus exports — but also drive sustainable development and conservation.

We believe Mpumalanga is uniquely positioned as a gateway to global growth markets, underpinned by renewable resources and collaborative partnerships.

Together with government, industry, and communities, we are committed to building a thriving economy for Mpumalanga!
