Q & A with the Interns at MDS Architecture.
Name: Laura Blom
School: University of the Witwatersrand: School of Architecture & Planning
Year of Study: 3rd Year
What made you choose architecture?
I chose architecture because from a young age I loved creating and designing things, and I have always enjoyed problem-solving. In high school this interest in design led me to take Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) as a subject where I really flourished and found it to be my favourite class. That experience confirmed my passion for the built environment and motivated me to apply for architecture. Choosing this path has been one of the best decisions I’ve made as it allows me to combine creativity, technical thinking, and problem-solving in a meaningful way.
Where did you first hear about MDS Architecture?
I attended the University of Witwatersrand for my undergraduate studies and during my third year of the degree we had honours students come do a presentation to us about their experience during their year out (their internship experience). One of the students had done their internship at MDS Architecture, she spoke highly of the firm, their work and the people. This presentation alone made me look into finding an internship position with MDS Architecture.
What surprised you most about working at MDS Architecture?
What surprised me most was how supportive and considerate the partners were during my first month. Instead of being thrown into the deep end, I was given time to find my feet, learn under supervision, and gradually build confidence. I was also pleasantly surprised by the emphasis on work-life balance and the genuine care shown toward staff well-being.
Which partner have you worked under so far and how did you find the experience?
I have been working under Pierre Lahaye and Donald McGillivray. They consistently take time out of their busy schedules to provide me with clear and thorough briefs, and they review my work afterwards to offer constructive critique. They both work incredibly hard, and I feel very privileged to be supervised by them during this internship.
