Seventy years ago, women marched for equality. Today, their legacy continues to shape our future.

On 9 August 1956, more than 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings, united in their determination to stand against injustice and refuse to be silenced. This Women's Month marks the Platinum Jubilee of that historic march, celebrating 70 years of courage, resilience and progress.

Today, that legacy lives on in the women shaping South Africa's mining sector. From underground operations to boardrooms, laboratories and processing plants, women are driving innovation, strengthening safety, advancing sustainability and leading meaningful change. As engineers, geologists, safety officers, chemists, artisans and executives, they continue to break barriers while advancing equality, dignity and opportunity.

As the Scraper Winches Day of Learning draws to a close, Mr Stuart Sepetla, Executive Safety, Implats, delivers the closing remarks reflecting on a day of knowledge sharing, collaboration and practical solutions to advance mining safety.​

The afternoon session featured valuable insights from Mr Guards Mabitsela (Sibanye-Stillwater), who presented the Loco Rerailing Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP), Mr Mvikeli Mpofu (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), who shared the latest research outcomes on alternative stope cleaning methods, and Ms Anathi Sonandi (Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited), who offered the engineers' perspective on strengthening safety across mining operations.​

Together, their insights highlighted the importance of innovation, engineering excellence and collaboration in reducing risk and advancing the industry's commitment to Zero Harm.​

Thank you to every speaker, delegate and industry partner who contributed their expertise and insights throughout the day. While today's discussions have come to an end, the work of building a safer, smarter and more resilient mining industry continues.​

The morning session of the Scraper Winches & Railbound Equipment Day of Learning highlighted the shared responsibility of industry leaders to eliminate fatal risks across one of mining's highest-risk operational areas.

Mr Maphsuka Tibane of the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa emphasised the importance of visible leadership, critical control verification and a strong safety culture.
Ms Nomvula Ngcobo of the Minerals Council South Africa shared insights from scraper winch incident data, reinforcing the need for stronger warning systems, proximity detection and rigorous equipment inspections.
Dr Joshua Kembo of the Bureau of Market Research presented preliminary findings from the Railbound Equipment (RBE) Data Analysis Project, highlighting the need for stronger critical controls, improved infrastructure and greater automation of high-risk operations.

Together, these presentations reinforced that achieving Zero Harm requires strong leadership, data-driven decision-making and continued industry collaboration.

In her keynote address, Maryke Burger of African Rainbow Minerals Limited called for a relentless focus on eliminating fatal risks associated with scraper winches and railbound equipment.

She emphasised that effective controls must be practical, consistently applied and backed by strong leadership to protect the employees most exposed to these risks. She also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between employers, organised labour, regulators and suppliers to strengthen safety across the industry.

Every fatality has a lasting impact on families, colleagues and communities. Achieving Zero Harm requires leadership, accountability and collective action to help ensure every mineworker returns home safely.

Representing the Mine Health and Safety Council, Mr Fleckson Magweregwede presented the industry’s safety performance for the year to date, with a special focus on Scraper Winches and Railbound Equipment.

This was followed by a moment of silence for the colleagues we have lost.
