The Minerals Council South Africa commemorates Youth Day by honouring the courage, resilience and legacy of the Class of 1976, while reaffirming our commitment to empowering the young people who will shape the future of South African mining.

Through our Young Professionals Programme, we continue to invest in the next generation of mining leaders by providing skills development, mentorship and industry exposure that support a more sustainable, innovative and transformed mining sector.

The youth of 1976 fought for opportunity, dignity and a better future. Today, we continue that legacy by equipping young professionals with the tools to lead, grow and make a meaningful impact in the mining industry and beyond.

“Mining and beneficiation are separate and distinct economic sectors in the mineral value chain. Beneficiation cannot, and must not, be imposed on mining because beneficiation forms part of manufacturing and overall industrialisation."

Minerals Council South Africa CEO Mzila Mthenjane took centre stage at the Junior Indaba, where discussions focused on the global geopolitical, supply chain and energy shifts shaping the future of junior mining.

Mzila chaired a panel exploring the best opportunities for junior miners across Africa and joined DMPR Director-General Jacob Mbele in a conversation on driving investment in South African exploration and mining.

"Without exploration and the willingness to take risks, you can't have a thriving junior mining sector in South Africa. We need to develop a system that works for everyone. We need policy certainty: administrative predictability and security of tenure." – Mzila Mthenjane
