Why I would choose a Solar PV solution over a diesel generator.
I am asked this question regularly and with good reason. A generator is relatively cheap to buy while a solar PV system is more expensive, however a generator comes with other risk that we don't normally consider. I would like you introduce you to these risks that are usually ignored by us, the homeowner. Generators are run on petrol, diesel or gas, all of which are hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are a rather interesting bunch of chemicals that are, amongst the obviously explosive nature, are carcinogenic as well as if ingested into the lungs possibly fatal. Hydrocarbons are a broad group of chemicals that contain hydrogen and carbon atoms. They are found in every home. Gasoline, kerosene, lamp oil and furniture oil are all examples of hydrocarbons. In America alone, over 55,000 small children are poisoned by swallowing hydrocarbons. (Please view the following web site for more information: http://www.carolinafirejournal.com/articles/article-detail/articleid/762/hydrocarbons-more-than-smoke-and-flames.aspx) The fumes from a diesel generator are said to be carcinogenic and exposure to hydrocarbons has been long know of the risk to your health. So the question I ask is, if we are so concerned with what we eat and really looking for a more healthier lifestyle, should we not consider what we store in our garages that have great risks associated with the fuel?
