Did you know that a factory can have relatively low electricity consumption and still incur high Maximum Demand charges?

That's because consumption and demand measure different things.

Electricity consumption (kWh) measures how much energy you use over time. Maximum Demand (kVA) measures the highest apparent power demand recorded during the applicable measurement interval.

Running several large machines simultaneously can create a high demand, even if they only operate for a short period.

How much electricity does your factory use when it is not producing anything?

Lighting, ventilation, water heating and equipment left running all contribute to your base load. If that figure gradually increases, your electricity costs can rise even when production stays the same.

Compare similar periods and look for changes in electricity use outside normal production hours. If the base load has increased, something has changed and it is worth finding out what.

Your electricity bill increased by 15%. Does that mean your factory used 15% more electricity?

Not necessarily.

The price of electricity may have changed, your tariff structure may have changed, or your Maximum Demand could have increased. Even an adjustment after months of estimated meter readings can produce an unexpectedly high bill.

The answer may have very little to do with production volume. A tariff increase, higher Maximum Demand, poor Power Factor or a gradual move into expensive peak periods can all increase what you pay.
