Children at Obama Daycare Centre in Mothibistad and Reaiteka Pre-School in Maruping have started the new school term in brand-new, purpose-built classrooms — replacing infrastructure that could no longer meet their needs.

Developed in partnership with Breadline Africa, each centre received two fully equipped classroom units, accommodating 18 children apiece. At Obama Daycare Centre, the upgrade has doubled the space available to enrolled children.

"As beneficiaries of our comprehensive ECD programme, which extends beyond infrastructure support, both centres also benefit from additional educational resources, leadership and management training, mentoring, practitioner development and registration and compliance support. Our goal is to not only improve the physical environment, but also to enhance the quality of teaching and learning within these classrooms," says Sandisiwe Mntonintshi, SED Manager at Kathu Solar Park.

We're proud to support early learning in our beneficiary communities alongside Breadline Africa, the Centre for Early Childhood Development and Santa Shoebox.

Congratulations, Lesedi Tshedimosetso Thankane!

We are incredibly proud to congratulate Lesedi on graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering, cm laude, from the Central University of Technology.

Lesedi is a beneficiary of our bursary programme, supported through StudyTrust, and his achievement is a testament to what becomes possible when young people from our communities are given the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

From a technical school student who discovered his love for Electrical Technology, to a cm laude graduate with his sights set on becoming a registered Engineering Technologist — Lesedi's journey is one we are honoured to have been part of.

In his own words: "Graduation is only the beginning of the journey."

On 6 May, Kathu Solar Park held a formal welcome event for the second intake of its graduate internship programme, bringing eight new interns from the John Taolo Gaetsewe District into the fold.

The occasion brought together interns, plant leadership, and programme stakeholders for an introduction to the facility and its operations — including hands-on exposure to the plant's Concentrated Solar Power parabolic trough technology, one of only a few installations of its kind in South Africa.

Zandi Nkone, CEO of Kathu Solar Park, noted that interns from the first cohort have already secured permanent employment — a clear indicator that the programme is delivering beyond the internship itself.

Since the programme launched in 2024, 22 graduates from the region have participated. The goal remains consistent: skills, confidence, and career pathways built within the community, not away from it.

Meet Boikanyo Mokgoje, a Control & Instrumentation Engineer intern from Kuruman. With a BEng Tech in Electrical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, Boikanyo enters the programme with a keen interest in advanced plant systems and automation.

Boikanyo is particularly excited to work with key instrumentation such as temperature sensors, flowmeters, and control valves, which operate under extreme conditions and are essential for both efficiency and safety. A key area of interest is how these instruments integrate with PLC and DCS systems, enabling real-time monitoring, control, and optimisation of plant performance.

As a recent graduate, Boikanyo sees this internship as an important step into the professional world, offering the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical environment while learning from experienced professionals and developing critical skills.
