*Preparation Defines Performance. Protection Defines Legacy.* Every hour spent preparing steel is an investment in its future performance. That’s where IPS makes the difference.

When structural steel is destined for one of South Africa’s most demanding industrial environments, there is no room for shortcuts.

For this project at Rand Refinery, every stage of the preparation and coating process was carefully planned and executed to meet the stringent requirements of a *C4 corrosion environment*. In environments like these, the quality of the preparation determines the performance of the coating system - and ultimately the longevity of the asset.

At IPS, we understand that corrosion protection starts long before the first coat of paint is applied. Strict Quality Control Plans (QCPs), detailed yard inspections, and mandatory hold points ensure every specification is met before moving to the next stage. This legwork is critical to achieving a coating system that performs as intended and supports long-term guarantees.

Our coating specification included:
• Abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ (Swedish Standard) – Hold Point
• Degrease and rinse – Hold Point
• Spray application of Sigma PPG Epoxy Primer at the specified dry film thickness – Hold Point
• Spray application of Sigma PPG Polyurethane Topcoat at the specified dry film thickness – Final inspection and release

Upskilling and refresher training are critical as Industrial Painting Services (IPS) enters the shutdown season.
With Jotun South Africa by our side, our teams are prepared to deliver coating applications that meet the highest industry standards. A coating system is only as good as its application, which is why understanding the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), correct mixing procedures, and proven application techniques is fundamental to achieving long-term coating performance.

This week, our team had the privilege of completing specialist training through Jotun South Africa’s Paint School, hosted at our IPS facilities.

The training focused on the correct selection, mixing, and application of Jotun’s advanced protective coating systems, including:
High Build Epoxies
Cold Weld Repair Epoxies
Advanced Polyurethane Coating Systems

The session placed particular emphasis on proper mixing procedures, application techniques, and best practices to ensure these high-performance products achieve their intended durability and provide long-term corrosion protection in demanding industrial environments.

As we prepare for a busy shutdown season, training like this ensures our teams are equipped with the latest product knowledge and application expertise to deliver safe, efficient, and specification-compliant work for our clients.

Richards Bay (Afrikaans: Richardsbaai) is situated on a 30-square-kilometre lagoon of the Mhlatuze River, which makes it one of the country’s largest harbours.

The Specification is:
-Sandblast to Standard S.A. 2 1/2
- Spray apply Primer : Apply Phenoline 921 200um
- Spray apply Intermediate : Apply Phenoline 921 200um
- Apply Carbothane 137HS once erected. By means of beam crawling - using a roller and a brush.

Investing in people is just as important as investing in equipment.
At IPS, High Pressure Water Jetting has long formed part of our specialist surface preparation and industrial maintenance capabilities. As with every high-risk activity we undertake, maintaining competency through recognised training remains a key priority.

In preparation for an upcoming project at Valterra’s Mogalakwena Mine, members of our operational team recently completed advanced High Pressure Water Jetting training presented by Total Blasting.

Delivered by a training faculty certified by both the Water Jetting Association (WJA) and the WaterJet Technology Association (WJTA), the programme combined comprehensive theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on application, ensuring our team is equipped to perform these activities safely, efficiently and in accordance with industry best practice.

With a critical 72-hour heat exchanger shutdown approaching at the Sasol Chemicals Midlands Poly 3 Plant, there’s no room for uncertainty.

IPS has been entrusted with a highly specialised Belzona repair on a critical heat exchanger using the Belzona 1511 / 1391T repair system. To ensure flawless ex*****on, we invested in what matters most - our people.

A hand-selected team recently completed dedicated product application training, gaining the practical knowledge and confidence needed to deliver this niche repair to the highest standard, first time.
