In South Africa sports binds us together and the 2026 FIFA World Cup gives us the opportunity to cheerlead with the same passion, pride and national unity that we show all our other sporting teams.

On the 11 June, sixteen years after hosting the historic 2010 tournament, our boys are back on the world stage, kicking off a mirror-match opener against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

To Coach Hugo Broos and the entire squad, from everyone at the Group, from the boardroom to the streets, from our most far-flung rural sites to the stadiums – we support you every step of the way.

Let’s fly the flag high and make some more history. Asambe, Bafana!

Our Western Cape region was delighted to welcome City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and members of his team at the official sod-turning ceremony just before Easter weekend, in early April. This symbolic event marked the commencement of a major upgrade project at the Macassar Waste Water Treatment Plant that will significantly improve the plant’s capacity from 21ml/d to 80ml/d.

We are very proud to be a part of this milestone mega water infrastructure project that will be built across this 26 hectare site, over a period of just over five years, and include the construction of 67 water retaining structures and 17 buildings.

The significance of this groundbreaking event goes beyond commencement of construction. It also serves as a symbolic marking of the potential impact this project brings to the region: in terms of employment and development opportunities, contribution to the local economies, improved delivery of sanitation services to the surrounding communities and enhanced environmental protection.

Our Western Cape Region colleagues, Petersen and Gabriel Kriel, are participating in this year's Absa Epic. As always, we construction folk like to be challenged, so the duo is not only taking on the 8-day, 692 km route (with 15,900 m of climbing). They have also set themselves a goal of raising R300 000 for (our in house managed eye testing and spectacle fitment programme) in association with the Vision4Change NPC.

Through the pledges, donations and incredible support to date, the amount raised now stands in the region of R250 000. A big thank you to the regions and over 20 other companies that have pledged their support.

The race started on Sunday March 15, and we will share updates from the team every now and again.

Let's see if we can get them over multiple finish lines over the next ten days!

Soon the asphalt works will be completed, the traffic diverted back to the original south-bound alignment, and the N2 flow around the Scottburgh Slip will return to normal. However, before our twelve months of work becomes a distant memory, we’d like to share a short recap.

What you don’t see...
After removing the existing southbound carriageway pavement layers over the failed area we removed 95 000 tons of failed embankment, all the way down to the toe of the existing thirty-metre deep embankment where we placed a rockfill foundation and installed a five-metre-high gabion wall retaining structure. While the excavation progressed downwards we stabilised the slope by installing soil anchors (at final count 1 700 of these) and wired mesh. Add to this restricted access for construction plant at the bottom of the excavation and often slippery haul routes in and out of the excavation due to wet conditions – a safety consideration that our team had to manage constantly.

The embankment was backfilled with 90 000 tons of commercial G7; six drainage layers were installed to accommodate future seepage; as well as four new stormwater lines (including manholes and outlets).

What you see...
A five metre high gabion retaining wall that we built at the top of the new embankment, to retain the southbound carriageway and the 1,2m pavement layers we are now almost done processing – comprising a stabilized subbase, asphalt base and wearing course; placing 1 750m of asphalt on the southbound and 750m on the northbound carriageway; as well as all of the ancillary works.

What you don’t see...

“We are known for building physical structures and roads, however, we also see the education of our future generations as a critical foundation for sustainable national growth," says Eswatini Director Dr Thandiwe Hlatshwayo.

January is often regarded as the most stressful month of the year for parents and caregivers, and families frequently struggle with the demanding costs associated with the start of the new year. To “soften the blow”, the office of Eswatini's Deputy Prime Minister (DPMO) conducts an annual “Back To School” campaign, which is led by the Honourable DPM Thulisile Dladla. This programme aims to support children from families who cannot afford basic school essentials, ensuring the nation’s future generation is fed, cared for, and protected.

This Wednesday, the 28 January, visited the DPM's Office in Mbabane to present a donation of E100,000.00 towards this initiative. This contribution will fund essential items for students, including school shoes, socks and toiletries.

The Honourable DPM Thulisile Dladla emphasised that this initiative is more than a charitable gesture; it is a direct investment in the future leadership of Eswatini. The Stefanutti Stocks team expressed pride in partnering with the DPMO in supporting a programme that enhances the development and wellbeing of communities across the country.
