We have gone International!!! 🇿🇦 🇧🇼

Botswana upsizing of existing 300mm to new 450mm HDPE for 495 meters by means of Pipe Reaming.

We were contracted to rehabilitate existing 300mm sewer pipelines and upsize to a new 450mm HDPE pipeline. Due to the significant upsize and lack of displacement due to the ground conditions, conventional pipe cracking was not a viable option.

We proposed Pipe Reaming as an alternative.

Pipe Reaming is a modified HDD technique that simultaneously breaks the existing pipeline together with removing surrounding ground material, this ensures that the level of the new pipeline will not change from the old pipeline.

We established our American Auger DD-10, and our longest consecutive pull was 94 meters (Manhole to Manhole).

Secunda HDD for 2 x 400mm water pipelines in Rock.

2023 started off with a bang!!!

The project consisted of 2 crossings with varying ground conditions from hard to rock formations. We established our American Auger DD-10 and Straightline Rock Eye Hammer.

We completed both crossings with the second crossing already having a tie-in point built. We achieved the crossing with great accuracy ending up exactly where the tie-in point was opened for the new HDPE pipe.

The void between the bore and pipeline was grouted after the installation of the new HDPE water lines.

Astec 4045 Track Tensioner Repairs

Our Astec 4045 HDD rig had an issue with the left-hand side track tensioner.

Upon investigating we found that the bearings of the tensioner housing were completely disintegrated and there was excessive wear to the main tensioner shaft as well as the internal bearing housing.

We started off with machining out the worn bearing hub. We then machined an internal bearing housing out of EN19-T which we installed into the track hub. Lastly, we machined a shaft with a grease channel and grease ni**le to grease the bearings as part of preventative maintenance.

We also machined two spacers to center the track tensioner to the track drive motor, installed new bearings, and assembled the track tensioner.

HDD Eldorado Park (River Crossing) 170-meter crossing.

Our longest HDD crossing for the year started off in Eldorado Park where we were tasked with installing a 450mm HDPE pipe over a distance of 170 meters in one continuous pull.

The area was a wetland and included a river crossing. Our time period for the installation of the new pipeline was relatively short as we wanted to complete the crossing before the rainy season. The new pipeline was to replace an old overhead steel pipeline that was leaking fresh drinking water at many of the pipeline joints.

We established our American Auger DD-10 which has a maximum pullback/thrust of 45 metric tons with 18 982NM of torque. For this project, we reached a peak pullback of 7 tons (15%) and a peak torque of 4 500NM (23%).

The ground conditions were non-reactive clay which can be incredibly difficult to drill in if the incorrect combination of chemicals are used, clay tends to stick to the HDD tooling which results in balling of the tooling which increases both torque and the pullback tonnage, which could cause the new pipeline to get stuck which renders the bore completely useless with the loss of equipment and new product pipe, and inevitably breaks equipment which delays the project.

Initially, we expected this crossing to take 12 days from pilot bore to pipeline installation, however, we installed the new HDPE pipe in 5 days. We maintained approximately 1.5 meters of cover from the depth of the riverbed (approximately 3 meters deep) and maintained approximately 1.8 meters from NGL after the riverbed until we reached the launch pit.

It's that time again!!!

Group 33 Engineering will be closing for our annual builders break on Tuesday the 13th of December 2022 and opening on Monday the 09th of January 2023.

Our new to us American Auger DD-10 was in bad shape when we got it.

The tracks were not assembled as the bearings on the track tensioners were worn out, further the rig's motor would turn over but would not start.

After some investigating, we found that both intake and exhaust valves were broken in the cylinder head and the rocker arms were not in the correct place, we then removed the cylinder head and found that previously the rig was being operated with broken valves on the third cylinder. The piston was evidence that the valves had been broken for a while.

Damage was done to the cylinder head on piston 3, both exhaust and intake valves at piston 3, piston 3 itself, and the injector at piston 3. Upon further investigation we found the valve ends in the exhaust manifold and the other in the turbo housing.

We completed the following on the CAT Acert 6.6 motor:

-Pressure test, skim the cylinder head and install the new valve seats.
-New injector for cylinder 3
-New Piston and rings for cylinder 3
-New head gasket
-2 new exhaust valves
-2 new intake valves
-Seating of all valves
-Replaced valve steam seals (24)
-Replaced glow plugs (6)
-Replaced diesel priming pump
-Oil filter
-Air filters (2)
-Diesel filters (2)
-Coolant change
-Engine oil change
-Strip and clean the diesel tank
-New bearings and machining of track tensioner (Both track tensioners)

All parts were replaced with OEM parts except the injector and valves. All works were completed in-house.

Braamfontein 200mm water crossing in hard rock.

We established our 4045 HDD rig and Straightline Air Hammer for this crossing. We encountered hard rock formations which took its toll on our hammers' tungsten carbide inserts.

At the tie-in point, the client dug down to the invert using pneumatic jackhammers, the rock formation was so hard that they broke 5 moils before lunch.

This crossing was across the main road that was constantly busy with traffic, including a dedicated bus lane. HDD causes limited traffic disruption as opposed to open trenching which in this instance would have required the entire road to be closed off and traffic to be diverted to alternative routes. Let's not even start with the project duration when digging into a formation like this.

Lenasia 160mm water and sewer crossings HDD soft and boulder ground conditions.

Our good client required our services in Lenasia again, the scope of work entailed HDD for 25mm house connections (water) over 3 crossings, 1 160mm water crossing, and a 160mm sewer crossing.

We completed the water crossings including the HDPE Butt Welding of the 160mm product pipes, however upon an investigation of the 160mm sewer crossing, it was decided that we would attempt to drill but due to the boulder formations at this particular site, we could not guarantee that we would be able to drill to the required level.

During the pilot bore our HDD head was thrown off level and we decided to not continue drilling to save our client both time and money.

On a previous job where we encountered hard ground conditions, we completely sheared off the end of our old drill shoe.

We attempted sourcing a drill shoe locally with no luck. . . Our only options were to import a drill shoe from the States and wait approximately 2 weeks or to manufacture our own.

We chose the latter. Starting by profile-cutting a 40mm thick steel plate, then milling the edges to get the shape we wanted, and milling an angle to the cutting edge of the head in order for us to have the ability to steer the head while drilling.

We drilled holes for the tungsten carbide tip inserts which reduces wear to the drill shoe, after we heat treated the drill shoe and gave it a coat of paint, not that it's going to last very long.

Lenasia 315mm sewer crossing HDD soft material.

This crossing consisted of a 25-meter 315mm HDPE sewer pipe that we needed to drill at a gradient of 0.2%.

We had a second 315mm crossing of approximately 20 meters, however, at the pipe level we came across large boulder formations which made maintaining the 0.2% gradient an impossibility, rather than waste time attempting the crossing we advised the client that the best solution would be to open trench this section.

Rock drilling would have been an impossibility as the boulders would throw off the air hammer and maintaining the gradient would be impossible. If the host pipe was to be used for water, we would have had no problem with the installation of the new HDPE pipe.
