The main export channels for manganese, via Port Elizabeth & now also Saldanha, appear to be at capacity.

Necessity is the definitely the mother of invention.

Luderitz is the about the same road distance from the Kalahari manganese fields as the other alternative, Durban. Except with much gentler gradients and less traffic.

More than half the distance also has underutilized railway infrastructure.

TRANSNAMIB LIMITED, Namport, Tradeport Namibia and others have been working steadily for years to come up with a solution and to win business for Namibia generally and the Port of Luderitz in particular.

Firstly 143km of railway from Aus to Luderitz was rehabilitated after falling into disuse in the 1990s.

Trucks can now theoretically haul manganese 435km from Hotazel to a FEL siding at Ariamsvlei, where it can be loaded on to dedicated trains to be railed the 630km to Luderitz.

Road hauling all the way to Luderitz is potentially also competitive with Durban, except for the absence of any kind of backhaul opportunities.

Tshipi e Ntle Manganese Mining signed a deal to start using this channel earlier this year with the hope of growing from a modest single shipment of 30 000 tpm to two shipments a month.

This channel is still developing, but will be interesting to watch.
