BA - GA PHADIMA SAND MINING DECLARES ITS FIRST EVER DIVIDENDS

Since its inception in 2010, the Ba - Ga Phadima Sand Mine community project has grown in leaps and bounds. Enthusiastic, determination and with a willingness to thrive, the community secured the rights to mine and sell the river sand deposits to a near by booming construction sector.

Support given to Ba - Ga Phadima Sand Mining from BHP Billiton Manganese included the commissioning of a business plan to explore viability, operational and technical skills in setting up the mine, Mine Health and Safety and Environmental compliance systems, Business training, coaching and Mentorship of the enterprise employees; setting up of the finance system; and purchase of operation's vehicles ( 2x loading trucks and 1x operational bakkie).

Over and above skills offered by BHP Billiton Manganese SA in setting up the mine, the initial capital investment of R6 million in setting up the operational infrastructure and human resources yielded long term sustainable results which enabled the co-operative to manage the project profitability.

This self-sustaining Project managed to create 20 permanent job and 44 seasonal jobs for members of the local community development fund with no external funding support and has also secured a supplier status at the BHP Billiton Hotazel Manganese Mines.

The enterprise continues to honour its financial obligations fully which includes paying tax, reporting on the mining charter performance targets to the Regulator (Department of mineral resources ) but above all, it has launched it's own community bursary scheme aimed at assisting local youth to further their studies. Currently the project has one student in the program studying N4 Millwright (Olebogeng Maphage) at Kathu Technical College.

Highlights of the project since operation include the following achievement:

- Donated R30, 000 to Reikagile Early Learning Center building a two room for the center in Masilabetsane and Doxon II in 2014

- Donated R20, 000 to Ditshipa Early Learning Center for fencing premise at Ditshipeng in 2014.

- Donated river Sand to other early Learning Centers

- Cleaning Battlemount cemetery in 2014

- Purchased 1x tipper truck in 2013/2014 in response of high demand for sand.

- In 2014, provided experiential training to two local youths on Front-End Loader machine operation - Barloworld Certificated ( Kgotso Mokomele and Phomolo Marate)

- in 2012, provided Omphemetse Ntlhaile with Transport Loader Backhoe (TLB)

- Provided two interships workplace learning to local students

- Through the DTI Grant - a Copelyn Tipper Trailer was bought

- During a month of January - February 2015 a total of 177 co - operative members were for the first time paid their dividends of R5000 each member.
The project has gone from strength to strength since inception, and in demonstration of its success, the Northern Cape Department of Mineral Resources gave recognition to the project when they extended and invited the Ba - Ga Phadima Sand Mining to their stakeholder engagement forum which was held recently and notably it was only Community Mining entity invited at the event.
