The construction industry has become one of the most overlooked and undervalued industries out there.
Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours doing site visits, sitting with clients, planning projects, measuring, calculating, quoting, revising, and trying to help people achieve the vision they have for their homes and properties. Days — sometimes even weeks — invested into projects before a single brick is laid. And more often than not, it ends with either no reply at all, or the classic: “We’ve got someone we know that’s going to do it.”
What makes it more frustrating is hearing constant complaints about contractors — poor workmanship, unreliability, shortcuts, laziness — yet when it comes time to pay for proper quality work, professionalism suddenly becomes “too expensive.”
The reality is: quality costs money. Experience costs money. Accountability costs money.
People want champagne results on a beer budget, and it simply doesn’t work that way.
What many don’t realise is how much work goes into a proper quotation alone. Site inspections, measurements, calculations, sourcing, planning, admin, travel, and years of experience — all before a project even starts. Yet somehow, that time is expected for free.
Meanwhile, other industries charge for every minute of their expertise. Attorneys charge for calls, emails, printed pages, consultations, and document reviews — and rightfully so. But somehow contractors are expected to invest hours, days, and expertise without compensation.
That mindset needs to change.
So from today, quotation fees will officially be implemented. Not to inconvenience anyone, but to value time, professionalism, and serious clients who genuinely want quality work done.
Another issue that has become increasingly common is people taking on highly specialised work themselves purely to save money. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with DIY projects within reason — but there’s a massive difference between painting a wall and handling structural, roofing, or electrical work that can become life-threatening if done incorrectly.
At the end of the day, price should never matter more than safety and quality.
Today I’m proudly saying this:
Myself and Visionbuilt Contractors are worth every cent.
We don’t chase the cheapest price. We chase quality, professionalism, honesty, and workmanship that lasts. When we take on a project, we treat it with the same care and attention we would our own.
If you want cheap, there will always be someone cheaper.
If you want quality, professionalism, and people who genuinely care about the outcome of your project, then we’re the team for you.
We are not “bakkie builders,” and we refuse to compete at that level anymore.
To every contractor out there feeling the same frustration — keep pushing for quality. The industry needs more pride, more professionalism, and fewer shortcuts.
