💧🌱 **Better soil physics means better use of every rand you spend on water and fertiliser.**

When soil is compacted, drains poorly, stores too little water or restricts root growth, your inputs cannot work as efficiently as they should.

Understanding **Bulk Density, Ksat, DUL, Plant-Available Water, Saturation Point and Total Porosity** helps identify where water and nutrients may be lost—and where management can be improved.

The goal isn't simply to apply **more** fertiliser or irrigation. It's to make sure your soil can use what you already apply more effectively.

💰 **Better soil function. More efficient inputs. Less waste. Greater profitability.**

What’s happening beneath the surface of your field?

EMI soil surveying allows us to look beyond what is visible above ground. By measuring apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), we can identify soil variability and potential restrictive layers that may influence root development, water movement and nutrient-use efficiency.

At Van’s Lab, we combine EMI mapping with targeted soil sampling and ground-truthing to transform field data into practical management zones. This helps farmers understand where soil conditions change—and manage water, nutrients and soil constraints with greater confidence.

Your soil is telling a story. Let us help you understand it.

**Map it. Understand it. Manage it.**

What lies beneath the surface can determine everything that happens above it.
Van’s Lab is currently in Limpopo conducting an electromagnetic induction (EMI) soil survey—measuring how soil properties vary across the landscape before targeted sampling begins.
A field may appear uniform from the surface, while significant differences in texture, water movement, salinity, rooting conditions and production potential may exist below ground.
EMI surveying allows us to:
• identify spatial variation across large areas
• guide targeted soil sampling and ground-truthing
• investigate soil constraints at depth
• develop permanent management zones
• support more precise and defensible management decisions
The objective is not simply to produce another map. It is to help turn hidden soil variability into practical information that can guide sampling, land development, irrigation planning and long-term management.
Because farmers don’t need more data—they need answers.

💧 **Why does water run off instead of soaking into your soil?**

When rain falls, every millimetre counts. But if your soil cannot absorb that water, much of it can be lost as **runoff** instead of being stored for your crop.

Soil compaction, surface crusting, poor structure, low organic matter and limited pore space can all reduce infiltration—leading to water loss, erosion and poorer water-use efficiency.

At Van's Lab, we measure the physical properties that determine **how water enters, moves through and is stored in your soil**.

🌱 **Don't just measure how much rain you received. Understand how much your soil actually captured.**

Better infiltration = Better water storage = Better crop resilience.

🌱 **Why do crops wilt even after rain?**

Rainfall doesn't automatically mean your crop has enough water.

Water may run off the surface, drain beyond the root zone, or remain in the soil where roots simply can't access it. **Compaction, poor infiltration, soil texture, shallow rooting and low plant-available water** can all leave crops stressed—even when the soil looks wet.

At Van's Lab, we measure how your soil **stores, moves and supplies water** so that you can identify the real limitation and make better management decisions.

💧 **It's not just about how much rain you receive—it's about how much of that water your soil can capture, store and make available to your crop.**

🌱 The healthiest soils aren't always the richest—they're the best understood.

For generations, farmers have relied on what they could see above the ground. Today, successful farming begins by understanding what lies beneath it.

Bulk Density is one of the most important soil physical measurements because it tells us how compact your soil is and how well it can support healthy root growth, water movement and air exchange.

When bulk density is too high:
❌ Roots struggle to pe*****te the soil.
❌ Water infiltration decreases.
❌ Oxygen becomes limited.
❌ Crops become more vulnerable to drought stress.
❌ Yield potential declines.

At Van's Lab, we measure Bulk Density from undisturbed soil core samples, preserving the soil's natural structure to provide accurate, reliable data that supports better management decisions.

Understanding your soil's physical condition allows you to:
✅ Improve water-use efficiency
✅ Reduce soil compaction
✅ Build healthier root systems
✅ Increase long-term productivity
✅ Invest where it matters most

You can't improve what you don't measure.

That's why we don't start with recommendations—we start with understanding.

🌍 Every soil is different—and that's why every field should be managed differently.

Soil texture is the foundation of how your soil behaves.

The proportion of sand, silt and clay determines how your soil stores water, holds nutrients, drains after rainfall and supports root growth.

A sandy soil behaves very differently from a clay soil, which means applying the same management practices across every field can lead to wasted inputs and reduced yields.

At Van's Lab, we measure and analyse your soil texture alongside its physical properties to understand how your soil functions—not just what it's made of.

This allows farmers to make better decisions regarding:
✅ Water management
✅ Fertiliser efficiency
✅ Crop selection
✅ Soil improvement strategies
✅ Precision and regenerative farming

🌱 The goal isn't to have the "best" soil—it's to understand your soil and manage it according to its unique potential.

Every soil tells a different story. We help you understand yours.

🌱 Healthy soil isn't solid... it's full of life-giving spaces.

When you look at soil, it may seem like a solid mass—but nearly half of healthy soil is actually made up of tiny pore spaces.

These pores are essential because they store water, hold air for roots, and allow water to move through the soil profile.

This is known as Total Porosity, and it's one of the most important indicators of a healthy soil structure.

If your soil has too few pore spaces, water struggles to infiltrate, roots battle to grow, and oxygen becomes limited.

If your soil has the right balance of large and small pores, your crops benefit from:
✅ Better water infiltration
✅ Improved drainage
✅ Greater plant-available water
✅ Stronger root development
✅ Healthier soil biology
✅ Higher yield potential

At Van's Lab, we measure Total Porosity using undisturbed soil core samples, giving you an accurate picture of your soil's physical condition—not just what's visible on the surface.

🌾 Healthy soils aren't just rich in nutrients—they're built with the right structure to support life.
