Here's something most installers won't mention when they quote you:
The rules around grid-tied solar systems in SA have quietly tightened. New compliance requirements (NRS 097-2-3, registration certificates, anti-islanding tests, reactive power profiles) are now mandatory — and getting more strict, not less.

If a system isn't installed to spec, the municipality can disconnect it. Insurance won't cover it. And when you sell your house, it becomes a problem you have to fix before transfer.

Some of the "cheap quote" guys are still installing the way they did in 2022 — wires straight from the roof to the DB board, no registration, no compliance paperwork. It works… until it doesn't.

The cost of compliance isn't optional — it's just hidden in cheaper quotes that skip it.

If you've been comparing quotes, here's the question to ask every installer:
"Will this system be NRS 097-2-3 compliant and registered with my municipality?"
Their answer tells you everything.

Your June electricity bill is going to be the worst one of the year.
Geysers running longer. Heaters on at night. Lights on by 5pm. Kettles working overtime. Pool pumps still doing their thing.
Now stack the new 8.76% tariff increase on top of all of that.

Why Victron & Solar MD" (Trust + Differentiation)

People ask why we only install Victron and Solar MD.
Honest answer? Because we have to live with what we install.

When something goes wrong on a system, we are the ones driving back out to fix it — sometimes years later. Cheap inverters mean more callouts, more replacements, more apologies to customers we genuinely care about.

We tried other brands early on. We've seen what fails first, what fails worst, and what fails quietly (which is the worst kind — when your system is "running" but only producing half the power it should).

Quick reality check on the SA solar market.

In the first 3 months of 2026, we installed more solar capacity in this country than we did in all of 2025 combined.
Read that again.

The "rush" wasn't load shedding in 2023. That was the panic wave.
What's happening right now is bigger — and quieter. Factories, farms, retail centres, business parks, serious homes. People who actually ran the numbers and realised buying power from Eskom is the most expensive line item they have.

Myth-Bust Post (Shares & Saves)
Three things people still believe about solar in 2026 that aren't true:
1️⃣ "It only makes sense if there's load shedding."
No. With tariffs climbing 8%+ a year, the grid IS the problem now — even when it's on.
2️⃣ "I need to wait for prices to come down."
Panel prices have been flat for two years. Battery prices already dropped. The thing that keeps moving is your bill.
3️⃣ "All inverters are basically the same."
They're really, really not. The difference between a R20k inverter and a Victron isn't price — it's whether it'll still be working in 10 years.

A factory we recently quoted was paying R187,000/month in electricity. After tariff increases this April? R203,000/month. That's R192,000 a year extra — for the exact same machines, running the exact same shifts. A properly sized Victron + Solar MD commercial system can cut 60–80% of that grid dependency. Section 12B tax allowance covers a chunk of the install. The rest pays itself back faster than most people expect. But here's what most installers won't tell you: a commercial system isn't a bigger residential system. The wiring, the protection, the load balancing, the redundancy — completely different game. Most home solar systems in SA are sized wrong.
Either too small (you're still buying half your power from Eskom), or too big (you've spent extra money on panels generating power you can't use or store).
The right system isn't the biggest one a salesman can sell you. It's the one matched to your actual usage pattern — when you use power, how much, and what you'd want backed up if the grid goes down.
That's why we run a full load profile on every home before we quote. Geyser, pool pump, AC, kettle at 7am — they all behave differently.
Cheap systems skip this step. Then you pay for it twice.
