Over the past few weeks Okusha Engineering designed installed and commissioned new Line Differential Protection for two 33kV overhead lines. The substations are approximately 3km apart and the system utilizes the ABB RED 615 relays in conjunction with an RPW600 modem in order to maintain the use of the existing straight copper pilot wire. The upgrade in protection was well worth it as an in zone cable fault was detected and the zone cleared in less than 50ms two weeks after installation, and thanks to the relays recording capability the effected phase could be identified immediately, resulting in minimum downtime.
