When people think about a new township, they often picture the houses that will eventually stand there.

What they do not always see is everything that has to happen first.

Our team recently completed the stormwater construction phase at the Brakpan Old Location Township Development for the City of Ekurhuleni, delivering the project on time despite challenging ground conditions, deep excavations and groundwater seepage.

The project forms part of a larger township development that will ultimately provide dignified housing and essential municipal services to families who need them most. Beyond the engineering, the project also created local employment opportunities, supported local SMMEs and provided skills development for community members.

The Brakpan Old Location Township Development is a reminder that every pipe installed, every trench excavated and every engineering decision made today contributes to creating safer, stronger and more dignified communities for tomorrow.

“Access to water is not just infrastructure, it is dignity, health, and opportunity.”

That message came through clearly during a recent mayoral oversight visit to the Kokstad Water Supply Scheme in the Harry Gwala District Municipality on 24 March 2026.

Led by Executive Mayors Zamokwakhe Nxumalo and Marcus Madikizela, the visit brought together the Department of Water and Sanitation, municipal leadership, and the local community around one shared priority: restoring reliable water supply.
The progress is tangible:
• ±69,000 residents benefiting
• Bhongweni scheme completed
• Shayamoya upgrades advancing
• R176 million Kempsdale Dam strengthening long-term supply
As Letlotlo Borane Pr Eng , Business Unit Head: Water at Zimile, noted:
“Key components such as the water source and increased storage capacity are already completed or nearing completion within 2026.”
What stands out is the shift from managing daily water interruptions to building a system that can sustainably meet future demand. This is what coordinated infrastructure delivery looks like when it works.

Today, on World Engineering Day, we celebrate more than infrastructure, systems and technical excellence. We celebrate the principles that shape how we think, act and lead.

As Zimile launches ALICE, our new set of guiding principles, we are reaffirming what engineering excellence truly means in practice: Accountability | Learning | Innovation | Collaboration | Excellence.

ALICE is not a campaign. It is a commitment.

It means standing behind our work and delivering results that stand up to scrutiny. It means staying curious in a rapidly evolving world. It means challenging “how it has always been done” and finding smarter ways to create value. It means building success collectively. And it means raising the bar, every single time.

On World Engineering Day, we recognise that the future of engineering will not be defined by technical capability alone, but by the mindset and behaviours that underpin it.

On Monday, 23 February, we brought together the full leadership of our Transport Unit for a focused management workshop that marks an important step forward for Zimile.

Our Route Managers, Resident Engineers, Project Managers and Contract Engineers met alongside Business Unit Heads in a single, structured forum. The objective was clear. Take an honest look at how we operate today, challenge ourselves where needed, and align on a sharper, more accountable way forward.

The conversation was robust and practical. We interrogated our current operating model, identified gaps, and agreed on priority actions as we prepare for the 2026/2027 financial year. The outcome is a clear, forward-looking strategy designed to strengthen delivery, improve coordination across projects, and position Zimile as a leading partner in the transport sector.

What stood out most was the shared commitment in the room. When technical leaders and business leaders align around performance, value and client impact, momentum follows.

We are entering the new financial year with greater clarity, stronger cohesion and a renewed focus on quality, efficiency and sustainable infrastructure delivery.

The work continues.
