“Access to water is not just infrastructure, it is dignity, health, and opportunity.”
That message came through clearly during a recent mayoral oversight visit to the Kokstad Water Supply Scheme in the Harry Gwala District Municipality on 24 March 2026.
Led by Executive Mayors Zamokwakhe Nxumalo and Marcus Madikizela, the visit brought together the Department of Water and Sanitation, municipal leadership, and the local community around one shared priority: restoring reliable water supply.
The progress is tangible:
• ±69,000 residents benefiting
• Bhongweni scheme completed
• Shayamoya upgrades advancing
• R176 million Kempsdale Dam strengthening long-term supply
As Letlotlo Borane Pr Eng , Business Unit Head: Water at Zimile, noted:
“Key components such as the water source and increased storage capacity are already completed or nearing completion within 2026.”
What stands out is the shift from managing daily water interruptions to building a system that can sustainably meet future demand. This is what coordinated infrastructure delivery looks like when it works.
