Stay cool, South Africa!
Choosing the right aircon isn't just about the price—it's about the BTUs. Think of BTUs like the "horsepower" of your cooling system. If the horsepower is too low, you'll sweat; if it’s too high, you’re just wasting electricity.
Which size do you actually need?
* 9,000 BTU (The "Bedroom" Special)
* Fits: Small bedrooms or home offices (approx. 15–18m²).
* Example: Perfect for a standard kid's room or a cozy study where you just need to take the edge off the heat.
* 12,000 BTU (The "Master" Suite)
* Fits: Large master bedrooms or small lounges (approx. 20–25m²).
* Example: If you have an en-suite bathroom and a king-sized bed, this is usually your best bet for a comfortable night's sleep.
* 18,000 BTU (The "Family" Room)
* Fits: Medium-to-large open-plan living areas (approx. 30–35m²).
* Example: Ideal for the TV room where the whole family gathers to watch the rugby or soccer.
* 24,000 BTU (The "Open Plan" Powerhouse)
* Fits: Large open-plan areas or light commercial spaces (approx. 45–50m²).
* Example: Best for those big modern lounge-and-dining room combos or a small shop front.
South African Tips:
* Facing the Sun?
If your room has big North-facing windows (getting that blazing afternoon sun), always go one size up!
* Close the Curtains:
Even the best aircon struggles against direct sunlight. Keep those blinds down during the day to save on your Eskom bill.
* The "Goldilocks" Rule:
Don't buy a massive 24,000 BTU unit for a tiny room—it will make the air feel damp and "clammy" because it cools down too fast to remove the humidity.
