🔬 Diagnostics in Action is underway!
This June, bioMérieux is launching a new webinar series designed for healthcare professionals across Africa. Through expert-led discussions, real-world clinical insights, and innovative diagnostic solutions, Diagnostics in Action aims to address some of the most pressing challenges in patient care.

🩸 The inaugural session focused on a critical topic: Bloodstream Infections and Sepsis Management, highlighting the clinical impact of the BIOFIRE® BCID2 Panel. A subject at the heart of rapid and effective diagnostic stewardship, explored by a distinguished panel of experts:

👩‍⚕️ Pr Thabet Lamia – Microbiology Professor, Vice-President of the Tunisian Society of Infectious Diseases (STPI) and Head of Lab, Trauma and Major Burns Center of Tunis (CTGB), Tunisia

👩‍⚕️ Pr Djennane Fazia – Microbiology Professor at Pharmacy Faculty of Algiers and Head of Microbiology Lab at Mother – Child at University Hospital Beni Messous d'Alger, Algeria

👨‍⚕️ Pr Mokhtar Ahmed – Director of Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Cairo University and Director of critical care liver transplant unit at Airforce Specialized Hospital, Egypt.

Effective management of Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) depends on rapid diagnosis and evidence-based clinical decisions. The 2020 ESC guidelines provide a comprehensive framework to support optimized patient care across all ACS presentations.

They emphasize the importance of early assessment using high-sensitivity troponins and risk stratification tools such as the GRACE score, while guiding clinicians toward the most appropriate therapeutic strategy - whether invasive management or medical treatment - to improve patient outcomes and reduce mortality.

Sepsis, a rapidly progressing life-threatening emergency.

In hospital settings, sepsis often arises as a progression of healthcare-associated infections, within a context marked by increasing antimicrobial resistance. This interplay complicates patient management, with evolving microbiological profiles and sometimes limited therapeutic options. The challenge lies in early identification of pathogens, rapid risk stratification, and the initiation of appropriate antibiotic therapy, ideally guided by rapid diagnostic tools and relevant biomarkers, in order to optimize patient outcomes and reduce morbidity and mortality.

Cardiac troponins (cTnI and cTnT) are the reference biomarkers for the diagnosis of Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS). Released into the bloodstream shortly after myocardial injury, they provide a highly specific indication of cardiac damage.

Their measurement plays a key role in confirming myocardial infarction, including in patients with non-specific or inconclusive ECG findings. The introduction of high-sensitivity troponin assays has significantly improved the early detection and management of ACS.

Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) are among the most critical cardiovascular emergencies, encompassing conditions such as unstable angina, NSTEMI, and STEMI, all linked to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

Each condition has distinct clinical and diagnostic characteristics that require rapid identification and appropriate management. Early differentiation between these syndromes is key to improving patient outcomes and limiting severe complications.
