Behind every successful industrial project is a network of technical decisions most people never see.

Material selection.
Weld integrity.
Failure prevention.
Performance optimisation.

These are the details that determine whether infrastructure succeeds — or fails under pressure.

One Eighty exists to support industries through engineering expertise grounded in science, precision, and real-world application.

We work alongside clients across Africa to help ensure projects are:
✔ Technically sound
✔ Operationally reliable
✔ Built for long-term performance

Because in industries where downtime, failure, and risk carry major consequences, technical certainty matters.

Procurement Insights for Africa’s Industrialisation and Energy Security Future
When it comes to critical infrastructure, what you don’t see can be far more important than what you do.

Materials may look identical on the surface, yet differ significantly in quality, traceability, processing history, and long-term reliability. The true cost of a failure is rarely measured at the point of procurement — it is felt later through downtime, safety incidents, costly repairs, and reputational damage.

For Africa’s industrialisation and energy security goals to succeed, procurement must move beyond compliance and focus on verification, material integrity, and independent testing.

As highlighted by Craig Botha during the 2nd RCA Conference:
“One leak, one spark, one headline.”
A single overlooked defect can have far-reaching consequences. That's why the real question is not what verification costs, but what certainty is worth within the total value of a project.

At One-Eighty Materials Engineering, we believe resilient infrastructure starts with informed decisions, rigorous testing, and a commitment to quality from the very beginning.

Test of the Month | Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

Some of the most important engineering evidence is invisible to the naked eye.
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) allows engineers to examine materials at extremely high magnifications, revealing microscopic details that help uncover the causes of fractures, corrosion, wear, contamination, and material failures.

In forensic engineering investigations, SEM plays a critical role by providing high-resolution images that help identify how and why a component failed. In the case of the MV Advance investigation, SEM analysis confirmed that the cast-iron bollard failed through rapid brittle fracture caused by overload, rather than corrosion or fatigue.

By looking deeper into the material structure, engineers can make informed decisions that improve safety, reliability, and performance across industries.
At One-Eighty Materials Engineering, advanced testing methods like SEM help transform microscopic evidence into practical engineering solutions.
