Looking back at my career, I can honestly say I would not change anything. Every chapter and every experience along the way helped shape me into the technical, mechanical, electrical and electronic person I am today.
At 18, I went from being a barman into the technical world, working with the installation of hospital intercom systems and two-way radio towers.
In my 20s came my first serious long-term position, working for a German gentleman at Anker Data Systems, where I spent approximately seven years. That experience gave me a strong technical foundation and taught me the importance of quality, discipline and attention to detail.
The next chapter took me into network cabling, including training at IBM, followed by another chapter working with PABX telephone systems.
From there, I became more of a general technical "hands-on" person, working with security systems, lightweight building solutions, plumbing, electrical work and air-conditioning installations. I even travelled to China for air-conditioning training, adding another skill to my growing technical toolbox.
Then came another important chapter — building automation and pneumatic tube transportation systems. This led me to Sumetzberger, where I became involved in the installation, commissioning, fault-finding, programming, maintenance and support of pneumatic tube transportation systems — work I am still actively involved with today.
When I look back, I realise that every chapter was preparing me for the next one.
Today, I see myself as a multi-skilled technical specialist who understands not only individual systems, but also how different trades and technologies come together in real-world working environments.
That experience has given me a practical understanding of what is required day to day on a project, in a building, in a hospital or on an industrial site.
And at 58, I’m still learning. My next areas of interest are robotics, hospital automation and the new generation of intelligent automated systems.
The journey is far from over.
Every chapter added another tool to the toolbox. 🔧⚙️🤖
