Seeing a team installing an air tube transportation system in India during the current heat wave brings back memories of one of my own installations in Zanzibar.

I remember just how hot it was. I would walk around with a towel around my neck while doing wiring, programming and quality checks.

Because of the heat, I often did most of the detailed quality checks early in the morning or late at night when the temperatures were more manageable.

Working in those conditions certainly isn't easy, but when you're responsible for getting a system installed, programmed, tested and working properly, you find a way.

It brings back some great memories — and a lot of respect for the teams out there doing the same work in extreme conditions. 🌡️🔧

One thing life and experience have taught me:

If you can’t do something properly, leave it to the person who can.

Don’t touch what you are not qualified or experienced to touch.

Leave specialised work to professionals. If you take on a task, make sure you have the knowledge, experience and skills to do it properly.

Don’t tell a customer you can do something when you can’t. It only leads to multiple repairs, wasted time, unnecessary costs and, ultimately, embarrassing situations.

If you fix a problem, fix it properly the first time.

Respect your customer’s time and money.

Ask for experience. Ask for qualifications. Ask for certification.

There is nothing wrong with saying, “I don’t know, but I know someone who does.”

That is professionalism.
