BRICS Astronomy, the South African Astronomical Observatory and other stakeholders visited the University of Venda and the University of Limpopo, with the objective of exploring ways to strengthen astronomy at Historically Disadvantaged Institutions and use the universities as a conduit to reach the surrounding communities.
Astronomy has the power to spark curiosity and open new possibilities. Yet for many learners and students in South Africa, a career in the field remains out of reach. The barrier is rarely a lack of interest or ability; more often, it is limited access, information and exposure.
The South African Astronomical Observatory (NRF-SAAO), together with other stakeholders, visited the University of Venda and the University of Limpopo. The aim was to explore ways to strengthen astronomy at Historically Disadvantaged Institutions and use the universities as a conduit to reach the surrounding communities.
Discussions centred on four priorities: strengthening astronomy research and teaching, expanding opportunities for students, developing skills, and building lasting institutional partnerships.
A key part of the programme also took the team into schools in Thohoyandou and Polokwane.
The visit was just the first step in a longer journey.
Working with the Department of Science,Technology and Innovation SA, the universities and local partners, NRF-SAAO will now focus on turning these conversations into practical actions that build lasting capacity. The ambition is for these universities to become regional hubs of astronomy, producing the next generation of South African scientists and opening the field to the communities around them.
The talent is there; the task now is to ensure the opportunities are too.
