Over the past year, Eskom has experienced the worst load shedding on record due to poor plant maintenance. On Thursday, Eskom executives revealed that massive backlogs remain and 25% of projects for the year have been deferred.

In a speech addressing load shedding last week, President Ramaphosa said “Eskom has to undertake the fundamental maintenance that is necessary to improve the reliability of our electricity supply. As it continues with maintenance, *load-shedding will remain a possibility for some time to come*, but we are not simply waiting for the inevitable.”

Stage 2 blackouts kicked in on Saturday morning and will continue for the rest of the weekend.

Old and unmaintained equipment has been the main challenge for Eskom.

“The capacity gap that we got at the moment is between 4,000 and 6,000 megawatts," said Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter.

"That is the size of a large power station like Medupi running flat out.

"That is what we need to get enough space to repair and fix our old coal power stations."

De Ruyter said South Africa can't afford to build new nuclear power plants.
