DID YOU KNOW...

The Earth receives 174 petawatts (PW) of incoming solar radiation (insolation) at the upper atmosphere.[5] Approximately 30% is reflected back to space while the rest is absorbed by clouds, oceans and land masses.

WHERE DID MODERN SOLAR GET STARTED?

The roots of modern solar power can be traced back to 1839.

It was at this time that a 19 year old French physicist, A.E. Becquerel, whose focus up to that point had been related to phosphorescence and luminescence, discovered the photovoltaic effect. He found that when gold or platinum plates were submerged in a solution, then exposed to uneven solar radiation, an electrical current was generated. This discovery was seized upon by scientists across the globe.

In the early 1860's, a French mathematician named August Mouchet began registering patents for solar powered engines. In 1878, Mouchet and his assistant Abel Pifre – who would go on to develop the first solar powered printing press – exhibited their solar powered engine at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, winning a gold medal for their efforts. Unfortunately, Mouchet's work was ahead of its time. The French government determined that solar power was not economically viable, and they terminated his funding. Fortunately, solar technology trudged on.

A SOLAR-POWERED HOME CAN REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS BY 100 TONS WITHIN 30 YEARS

Solar power translates to clean energy production and you can reduce your carbon footprint significantly by installing a home solar power system.

In other words, it’s not emitting the same pollution other energy sources typically do.

ONE HOUR OF SUNLIGHT EQUALS ONE YEAR’S WORTH OF ENERGY FOR THE ENTIRE EARTH

Solar power starts with solar energy, which is energy produced by the sun. When the sunbeams, its energy can be stored in solar panels. These solar panels transform energy into power in two different ways – photovoltaic, which is power used for electricity, and solar thermal, which is power used for heating.

The energy from the sun is the most abundant energy source available on Earth. With just one hour of direct sunlight, you could collect enough energy to generate a year’s worth of power for the entire Earth. There’s a lot of electrical juice from the sun!

THE FIRST SOLAR PANEL CELL WAS INVENTED IN 1941

Solar Panels are the best way to take advantage of the sun's energy.

In 1839, Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect—that is, the ability to create an electric current from the sun’s rays. Shortly after, Russell Ohl invented the first solar panel cell in 1941 and the first commercial panel was put out by Bell Laboratories in 1954.

Aeroplanes can fly around the world while running entirely on solar energy...

In early 2016, the Swiss pilot and professional explorer departed from Abu Dhabi in the famous aircraft known as Solar Impulse II, making this much anticipated worldwide return in July.

I bet you didn't know...Even as concern over climate change and energy security fuel a boom in solar technology, many still think of solar as a twentieth-century wonder.

Few realize that the first photovoltaic array appeared on a New York City rooftop in 1884, or that brilliant engineers in France were using solar power in the 1860s to run steam engines, or that in 1901 an ostrich farmer in Southern California used a single solar engine to irrigate three hundred acres of citrus trees.
