FREEZE for LATER

WATCH the VIDEO to see how easy it is to keep pomegranate arils fresh!

1. Remove ARILS from fruit. (See our earlier video if you’re not sure how to do this.) OR if you bought arils and are not using them all, pat the leftover arils dry, and follow the same steps as below.
2. SPREAD arils in an even layer on a lined baking tray.
3. FREEZE overnight until solid.
4. SCOOP into a suitable freezer bag, label and keep frozen for up to 6 months.

USING them FROM FROZEN is best, as they may lose some of their crunchy texture, as they thaw. Add the frozen arils to a jug of WATER or to chill drinks with. Enjoy the frozen arils as a SNACK or add them to desserts, yoghurt or your favourite breakfast. If you are adding them as a GARNISH or TOPPING for a side dish or salad, do so just before serving.

MAKE THEM LAST LONGER

Pomegranates are BEST KEPT, wrapped in a BROWN PAPER BAG, allowing the fruit to breathe, and stored in the refrigerator drawer for up to 3-4 months.

The THICK SKIN of a pomegranate has many BENEFITS. It’s tough enough to form a natural PROTECTIVE layer for the arils. Compared to many other fruits, the skin gives the fruit a longer shelf life, as it will dry out long before the arils do, keeping them juicy even when the skin starts to lose moisture. This is another important reason why our farmers make a huge effort to ensure that the skins are not damaged during the harvest.

GOURMET BREAKFAST!

A bowl of OATS has never looked this GOOD! Give your next warm breakfast a RUBY-RED MAKEOVER.

TOP it with pomegranate ARILS, toasted flaked or chopped almonds, a sprinkle of finely grated lemon rind and ground cinnamon. It’s such a special flavour combo!
OUR TIP: cook the oats with a mixture of half milk, half water for an extra creamy texture. Add a small piece of cinnamon stick for an extra comforting winter flavour.

BEYOND NATURE’S RED RUBIES

DID YOU KNOW that the SKINS (peels) of POMEGRANATES are also used in different ways?
It’s not just the arils which are pretty and full of the well-known red juice. The SKINS have been used as a natural textile and leather DYE for decades.
The skins are often used in BEAUTY and MEDICINAL products and as PRESERVATIVES, as they are high in antioxidants and also have antimicrobial properties. For these purposes, the peels are first dried and then ground to a powder, to add into a range of products.
On farms, the peels are added to some animal FEED for added nutrition, and any pomegranate waste is great for COMPOSTING.

POMEGRANATE ‘SPEAK’

Pomegranates are such a BEAUTIFUL FRUIT, but in actual fact, the real beauty lies on the inside – packed with lots of stunning, NUTRITIOUS ARILS.
One can get quite philosophical when it comes to pomegranates as they are a good comparison to some truths in life.
Just think about the wise quote on the image.
Or the SAYING:
‘The pomegranate is a reminder that beauty often hides beneath a tough exterior.’

POMEGRANATE TREAT for Mother’s Day this weekend

WATCH the VIDEO and make these in a flash!

POMEGRANATE YOGHURT POPSICLES

250 ml (1 cup) plain double cream yoghurt
20 ml (4 tsp) honey
2,5 ml (½ tsp) ground cinnamon
250 ml (1 cup) pomegranate arils (arils from ± 1 large fruit)
10-12 popsicle sticks
120 g good-quality dark chocolate
more pomegranate arils and dried rose petals for garnish

1. LINE a baking tray with baking paper. Set aside.
2. MIX yoghurt, honey, cinnamon and arils together. SPOON about 15 ml (1 tbsp) in small blobs onto baking paper. PLACE popsicle sticks on top, lightly pressing down. SPOON remaining mixture on top, to keep sticks in place. Or just make 30 ml (2 tbsp) clusters without the sticks.
3. FREEZE overnight or for at least 4 hours until solid.
4. Just before serving, place CHOCOLATE in a small heat-proof bowl and MELT over gently simmering water – don’t allow bowl to touch the water, as chocolate easily overheats.
5. Work quickly and DIP each popsicle halfway into the melted chocolate. Place popsicles on a serving platter lined with baking paper. DECORATE immediately with pomegranate arils and rose petals – the frozen popsicle sets the chocolate very quickly. Don’t allow it to melt.
6. Enjoy immediately or freeze again until you’re ready to serve them. Keep frozen in a suitable container for a few days. Makes about 10-12.

TIP: Good-quality chocolate melts easier. If needed, add 7,5 ml (½ tbsp) coconut oil to the chocolate while melting it, to ensure a smooth mixture.

We LOVE the saying:

‘CRACK it open – there’s magic inside!’ That’s perfectly true for a pomegranate.

WATCH this video to see how we easily remove the arils STEP BY STEP:
1. CUT off the CROWN (top of the fruit) with a sharp smooth-bladed knife, by only scoring the skin and lifting it off like a ‘lid’.
2. SCORE the SKIN according to the SEGMENTS of the white pith on the inside, WITHOUT cutting into the arils. There are typically between 4-6 segments.
3. PULL the segments apart.
4. Gently REMOVE the arils by pushing and POPPING them out of the white pith into a bowl.
5. ENJOY! In any of the mouthwatering ways suggested on this page!

Do you enjoy its lovely, sweet flavour or the colour it adds to a dish? Maybe your favourite part is the juicy little pops in your mouth. Perhaps it’s the excitement and feel of abundance when cracking open a fruit full or ruby red jewels.

LONG LIVE the POMEGRANATE!

Here is a THOUGHT to ponder over, while munching on some pomegranate rubies:

1. HOW MANY SEEDS do you think one pomegranate fruit can contain?
Well, our farmers tell us that it can vary from 200 to almost 800 seeds PER fruit. No wonder a pomegranate is such a ‘heavy’ fruit, as the seeds make up almost 50% of its weight.

DID YOU KNOW?

The taste of a pomegranate is not determined by the COLOUR of the outer skin of the fruit. In the same sense blemishes on the skin are not an indication of the fruit’s quality, ripeness or sweetness.

The cultivar will determine the colour of the skin and can range from deep red to pink, even with a touch of green, like the WONDERFUL cultivar in this image.
