Clearing the Garden-Route of invasive Black Wattle (Acacia Mearnsii) one tree at a time. Our area is overgrown with invasive alien tree species which threaten our scarce water resources. It is the responsibility of all land owners to clear their properties of these species. We are currently busy clearing a section of the Kat River, which is flowing into the Garden-Route Dam which supplies water to George and surrounding areas.

All our firewood is responsibly sourced from alien tree species and not 1 indigenous tree species is used or cut down!

Many trees were destroyed or blown over during the storms 2 months ago. We cleared many areas where Pine and Gums were removed. Today we planted 17 indigenous trees to restore our ecosystem. We can not take out without replanting. The mayor and councilors of George all helped to plant Fig, Plumb and Outeniqua Yellow wood trees, trees indigenous to this area. We want to create green corridors in all areas where our communities can enjoy our Fauna and Flora. While still planting the trees, a little bird came to visit.

Another day high up in the trees. We received a call to remove an alien Blackwood tree without damaging the surrounding indigenous plants and trees. So we just climb and cut down tree from the top with the help of rope and pulley. Another satisfied client.

Nb. No plants/trees were damaged during the process!

Another long week done and dusted. Hauling wood from the forest and stacking it for the timber trucks. Tough work but we want no other job. Through the smell of petrol and diesel there is no better smell than fresh cut Pine and Gum (both alien invasive species).

From the forest, to the sawmill to the mines in North-West as sleepers.

Assisting the George municipality in clearing a park where trees were blown over last month. Children could not play there anymore as trees fell onto the equipment. At least the kids can enjoy the park during the holidays. Children should play.

Another busy day in George still clearing up wind-blown and storm damaged Eucalyptus (Gum) trees. Only the storm damaged trees will be cut up and removed. Even though Gums are alien trees, they are an important source of pollen for honey bees. Trees not damaged will be left untouched to serve as bfast, lunch and supper for the bees without which no ecosystem will be able to survive.

Another week or 2 and most of the storm damage will be cleared up and our town to return to normal.

The storms of 2 weeks ago exposed our communities to the brutal forces of nature. It however also created opportunities for our unemployed youth. We employed 6 youth to help with clearing up operations. This was hard work but these youngsters showed they want to earn their money. All 6 are matriculants who did not say no to manual labor.

We were able to employ 2 of these young men until end December 2026. Our youth showed that they can and want to work if given the opportunity.

NB. They were just posing with the chainsaw!

Last week's storms caused havoc in George. Trees were uprooted and damaged infrastructure, houses and 1 fatality. Most damage was caused by trees planted too close to properties. Please plan what tree species you want to plant and where. Do not plant trees that you have to stress about the moment the wind starts blowing. Love your trees but think of your safety as well.

Just a few pics of the work since the storm.
