Roads are the first structures to built on the site. A surveyors mark out the roads and construction teams build them based on approved designs.

These roads allow equipment and workers to move around safely during the build.

Construction can’t begin without proper setup. Before construction starts, contractors will prepare the site with things like temporary offices, bathroom facilities, security, storage, and roads for easy access.

This makes sure the teams can work safely and efficiently throughout the project.

Ilikwa Solar is proud to support local enterprise Loncumo Holdings, run by Thomas Matsobane. By repurposing wooden pallets that are no longer used at the solar plant, Thomas creates unique, handcrafted furniture that gives new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste.

This kind of innovation not only supports local livelihoods but also promotes sustainable reuse within our community.

Now that the design is done, we move on to sourcing materials.

Material specifications are issued to several manufacturers based on the detailed design in order to obtain supplier proposals. The best supplier is selected based on quality, cost and timelines.

Once chosen, the suppliers are managed until everything is delivered to the site.

Last week, we were excited to welcome a group of high school learners from Barnard Molokoane Technical School to site.

The learners had the opportunity to see first-hand what it takes to build a large-scale solar plant — from the groundwork and structural installation to the electrical infrastructure that will soon generate clean, renewable energy.

Visits like these are about more than just showing a site. They’re about inspiring young people to see the possibilities available to them in the renewable energy sector.

We look forward to the next visit!
