When Engineering Starts to Look Like Art
Sometimes, you see something in the steel that wasn't deliberately designed to be there.
Walk through our factory and you'll find it everywhere.
A ribbon blender screw spirals down its shaft like a shell, polished welds catching the light as each flight rolls into the next.
A paddle mixer becomes an exercise in symmetry — shafts, arms and outer ring coming together around a precise centre point. From one angle, it almost looks like a piece of sculpture. From another, it's a machine built to mix tonnes of product, hour after hour.
And then there's a simple jig plate, where circles and rounded triangles come together across the steel. Once it's welded, polished and lit from the right angle, you can't help but see a web hiding in the pattern.
Perhaps that's what happens when engineering is done with care.
We cut, bend, weld, grind, polish and measure. We manipulate steel into shapes that first exist only as lines on a CAD drawing. And somewhere between the drawing and the finished product, something unexpected happens.
The steel starts to look like something.
A shell.
A flower.
A web.
A piece of art.
Nobody asks a mixer to be beautiful.
Nobody asks a weld to catch the light just right.
But we care about those things anyway.

Our recent attendance at the Women in Business Luncheon hosted by the Pietermaritzburg & Midlands Chamber of Business was a truly memorable experience. The event is designed to recognise and celebrate the significant role women play in driving business, innovation, and economic growth across our region.
The event brought together women from a diverse range of industries, each with unique stories, experiences, and perspectives. One of the most impactful aspects of the event was hearing from inspirational speakers who shared their personal journeys of resilience, determination, and success.

Investing in knowledge is investing in better engineering.
Last week, members of the Anderson Engineering installation, process, and design team, together with our automation partner, Hybrid Automation, had the opportunity to attend an advanced hygienic instrumentation training session hosted by IFM at their Innovation Hub in Pretoria.
The training focused on the selection, specification, and installation of hygienic process instrumentation for the food and beverage industry, with emphasis on international hygienic design standards including 3-A Sanitary Standards, FDA requirements, and EHEDG best practices.
The programme covered a wide range of topics, including:
• Hygienic instrument selection and installation best practices
• Hygienic process adapters and correct installation methods
• Diagnostics and device configuration using moneo IIoT platform
• AS-i and IO-Link communication architectures for field instrumentation
• Best practices for commissioning, diagnostics, and long-term maintainability
As an engineering company, we believe that delivering successful projects requires more than selecting quality equipment—it requires understanding how to apply it correctly. Continuous technical development enables our team to design, install and commission systems that are reliable, hygienic, and maintainable throughout their lifecycle.
By staying up to date with the latest process instrumentation technologies and communication platforms, we continue to provide our customers with practical engineering solutions that optimise both new installations and existing production facilities.

This Mandela Day, the Anderson Engineering team was reminded of just how powerful a community can be when people come together with a shared purpose.
As the sun warmed the winter morning, our team gathered around the fire, embracing the cold with warm hearts and a determination to make a difference. Together, we prepared two large pots of nourishing food as part of the Food For Love Africa Big Feed 2026 campaign, helping provide hot meals to disadvantaged members of our community.
What made the day even more remarkable was the incredible scale of the initiative. A total of 108 pots of food were cooked by businesses, families, organisations, and volunteers who stood side by side with one common goal—to ensure that no one was forgotten. The campaign not only provided thousands of warm meals on Mandela Day but also raised vital funds to support communities in need throughout the year.
We were incredibly proud of the Anderson Engineering team, who worked side by side throughout the day, embracing the fire, smoke, and chilly weather with enthusiasm and a shared commitment to serving our community. The smoke may have filled the air, but it certainly didn't dampen our spirits. Instead, it became a reminder that meaningful change often requires us to step outside our comfort zones and work together for something greater than ourselves.
One of the most rewarding moments of the day was seeing where the food was distributed and witnessing the smiles on the faces of community members as they enjoyed a freshly prepared, hot meal. Knowing that something we had cooked with care was bringing comfort, warmth, and nourishment to others was an incredibly humbling and emotional experience. It reminded us that acts of kindness, no matter how simple they may seem, can have a meaningful impact on someone somewhere.
There was something truly special about looking around and seeing hundreds of people united by kindness, generosity, and hope. The laughter, teamwork, and shared sense of purpose created an atmosphere that was both humbling and inspiring.
At Anderson Engineering, we are passionate about engineering solutions—but we are equally passionate about building stronger communities. Being part of this incredible initiative was an honour, and we are grateful to Food For Love Africa for bringing so many people together to create a lasting impact.

To Laser Weld or not to Laser Weld — that is the question?
Let's be honest upfront: Laser Welding is not a one-fix wonder — but it does make welding easier and more efficient.
Meet our two agents on the case 🕵️ Dilon Murugen (left), our Senior Welding Inspector and Responsible Welding Co-ordinator, armed with the laser gun, and Cornelyn Stardler (right), one of our welders, holding the TIG torch. No shaken-not-stirred martinis here — just two very different tools, and a healthy rivalry over which one wins. So which is the better secret weapon? As with most things in our workshop, the honest answer is: it depends.
We at Anderson Engineering were early adopters — we bought our own Laser Welding machine almost two years ago, one of the first of its kind on the South African market at the time. Our experience keeps confirming the age-old saying: different horses for courses.
TIG/GTAW/Argon remains our preferred method for precision and quality, with Laser welding earning its place on thin-walled, lower heat input work such as outer casings, platforms, and frames. As with anything new, we're still testing its pe*******on across various thicknesses and materials — chasing full pe*******on, good deposition, and a consistently clean weld.

How the two stack up:
🔹 Heat & Precision — Laser: very low heat input, minimal distortion. TIG: great control, but more heat and distortion risk.
🔹 Speed — Laser is 3–5x faster; TIG is slower and more labour-intensive.
🔹 Quality — Laser gives narrow, clean welds with minimal spatter. TIG delivers high quality, but leans heavily on operator skill.
🔹 Cost & Skill — Laser: higher upfront cost, easier to run, lower labour. TIG: cheaper to set up, but demands high skill.
🔹 Best for — Laser: thin-to-medium (0.5–6 mm) sheet metal, stainless, cosmetic and production welds. TIG: pressure vessels, piping, structural, repairs, and thick sections.
In short: Laser wins on speed, precision, and production; TIG remains the go-to for code-compliant, structural, and heavy-duty work.
We're also freshly recertified on both ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and ISO 3834-2:2021 (Welding Management) — so whichever method your project calls for, you can count on uncompromised workmanship, every time. ✅

What Dreams Can Become
Anderson Engineering has reached another important milestone in its digital transformation journey with the successful implementation of a fully digital Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and supporting documentation process.
We are proud to announce the successful completion of a FAT for a 5,000L Product Storage Tank with one of our valued local clients, who will be utilizing the tank in their tomato sauce production facility.
While the FAT was conducted digitally, we remained committed to maintaining the highest quality standards, fully aligned with our ISO 9001 and ISO 3834 accreditations. This achievement marks one of our key milestones for the year, and we are only getting started.
Through our continued dedication to innovation and continuous improvement, Anderson Engineering is working towards reducing paper waste, empowering frontline workers, and responding more effectively to evolving customer needs.
This achievement also highlights the strength of our people. In an industry traditionally dominated by men, we were proud to have 50% female participation in the FAT process, with each participant representing a different department, from Design and Procurement to Validation. Their contribution reflects the diverse talent and expertise that drive Anderson Engineering forward every day.

Standards don’t change with distance. They get tested by it.

At our JHB remote office, we build the same Anderson Engineering benchmarks as the factory floor.

Our day away from the design office, together with our Managing Director, was about far more than just driving up Sani Pass. It was a reminder of the value of teamwork, perspective, and occasionally stepping away from the pressures of everyday work life.
In the design office, we deal with tight deadlines, complex designs, problem solving, challenges, and the responsibility of turning ideas into successful projects. But surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Drakensberg mountains — endless views, fresh mountain air, rolling clouds, and the quiet stillness of nature — we were reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the journey along the way.
The climb up Sani Pass became the perfect metaphor for the work we do together. Starting at the bottom, navigating winding roads, steep climbs, rocky terrain, and unexpected turns — much like the early stages of a project where the challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming.
But through trust, communication, teamwork, and a shared goal, we keep moving forward together until we eventually reach the top, where the road smooths out and the view makes every obstacle worthwhile.
A powerful reminder that no matter how difficult the road may become, strong teamwork will always help us reach the summit.
