eNtsa is an engagement institute within the Nelson Mandela University.

As an internationally recognised innovation hub, the group focuses on engineering design, component and material testing, prototyping and industrial R&D. eNtsa continuously strives to enhance technology innovation and to stimulate a climate of sustainable socio-economic growth in South Africa, and maintains strong relations with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the Department of Science

and Innovation (DSI). The group consists of approximately 20 technical engineering staff, working full-time on industry projects, utilising advanced engineering skills and technologies to meet the needs of industry and align itself with the Nelson Mandela University’s vision and mission by creating an innovation culture and enhancing social, economic and ecological sustainability.

Marine Robotics in Action at Nelson Mandela University Research and Innovation Week!

Elbert Liebenberg represented the eNtsa Marine Robotics Unit at the South African International Maritime Institute - SAIMI Special Session on 3 September on "The Role of Maritime Technologies in Forging Intelligent Futures", showcasing the exciting student projects and research driving innovation in marine robotics at Nelson Mandela University.

A unique piece of South African sporting history has been digitally preserved through collaboration between eNtsa and the Nelson Mandela University Visual Arts Department.

Using eNtsa’s advanced 3D scanning capabilities, our team captured detailed digital models of two bronze sculptures depicting Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar during the iconic 1995 Rugby World Cup victory, a moment that united a nation and remains one of the most significant milestones in South Africa’s history.

This project highlights how engineering and digital technologies can support the preservation of cultural and historical assets for future generations.

🌊 Preparing our Smart Buoy for extreme weather

eNtsa recently collaborated with the Nelson Mandela University Emergency Medical Care (EMC) team to service our Smart Buoy ahead of expected extreme weather conditions.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Travis Trower, Mr Paul Allan and their students for making the Nelson Mandela University EMC equipment available and combining a valuable training exercise with the required buoy servicing.

The Smart Buoy is an important research platform that provides real-time sea-state information to researchers at the Marine Robotics Unit, supporting ongoing monitoring and research in our marine environment.

Congratulations to Hubert Van Der Merwe (Pr. Eng.) on an outstanding achievement!🎉

Hubert has been crowned the winner of the MSC Apex Pro User Challenge, hosted by SIMTEQ Engineering (Cadence | MSC Software partner), with the award presented at the recent SIMTEQ User Conference.

The MSC Apex User Challenge is a highly competitive simulation event where participants are tested on their ability to efficiently perform geometry cleanup, pre-processing, and meshing under strict time constraints. Competitors are tasked with transforming a complex industry CAD model into a fully stitched, error-free, analysis-ready FEA mesh in record time.

This achievement is a testament to Hubert's exceptional technical expertise, precision, and problem-solving skills. Well done, Hubert we are incredibly proud of you and this well-deserved recognition! 👏🏆

Expanding knowledge, strengthening networks, and unlocking new possibilities for advanced materials characterisation.

During his recent visit to the UK, eNtsa Group Specialist: Research and Development, Dr Dreyer Bernard, had the opportunity to visit Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, gaining valuable exposure to world-leading synchrotron and neutron diffraction facilities.

At eNtsa, we provide advanced X-ray analysis services, including residual stress measurement, phase analysis, and Micro-CT scanning. While these technologies offer significant insights into material behaviour, exposure to synchrotron and neutron diffraction techniques broadens our understanding of how high-energy radiation can be used to investigate thick and complex samples with greater depth of pe*******on.

Engagements such as these are instrumental in diversifying expertise, building international research networks, and exploring future opportunities to advance materials characterisation capabilities that support industry innovation.

Last week, eNtsa and uYilo Electric Mobility Programme partnered with Automotive Industry Development Centre to deliver impactful training in Rosslyn. During the second half of the programme, participants engaged in:

- Electric Vehicle training using a High Voltage Simulator for Automotive Supplier Park members

- Principles of Welding Technology training for Automotive Supplier Park members

- Root Cause Analysis training for TVET students and lecturers

This collaboration is part of our ongoing commitment to expanding access to industry-relevant training, increasing technology exposure, and strengthening the youth skills pipeline within the region.

🚗 Calling all Eastern Cape automotive component manufacturers!

The Automotive Localisation Testing (ALT) Programme, hosted by eNtsa, is here to provide product & material testing and development support to help strengthen the Eastern Cape automotive supply chain.

With the support of AIDC Eastern Cape, Technology Innovation Agency, and Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, the programme invites qualifying component manufacturers to submit their proposed testing requirements.

Who can apply?
✅ South African automotive component manufacturers operating in the Eastern Cape requiring testing before Feb 2027
✅ SME, Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers are eligible for up to 100% subsidy of project cost
✅ Large Tier 1 suppliers are eligible for up to 50% subsidy of project cost
