Expanding knowledge, strengthening networks, and unlocking new possibilities for advanced materials characterisation.

During his recent visit to the UK, eNtsa Group Specialist: Research and Development, Dr Dreyer Bernard, had the opportunity to visit Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, gaining valuable exposure to world-leading synchrotron and neutron diffraction facilities.

At eNtsa, we provide advanced X-ray analysis services, including residual stress measurement, phase analysis, and Micro-CT scanning. While these technologies offer significant insights into material behaviour, exposure to synchrotron and neutron diffraction techniques broadens our understanding of how high-energy radiation can be used to investigate thick and complex samples with greater depth of pe*******on.

Engagements such as these are instrumental in diversifying expertise, building international research networks, and exploring future opportunities to advance materials characterisation capabilities that support industry innovation.

A proud moment for the eNtsa team as Dr Dreyer Bernard, Group Specialist: Research and Development at eNtsa, recently presented at the International Friction Welding Conference hosted by TWI in the Cambridge.

His presentation, “Development, Implementation and Quality Control of Friction Stir Welding as a Robust Production Technology for the Road Tanker Industry”, showcased the world-class innovation, technical excellence, and industry impact being achieved through collaboration between eNtsa and industry partners.

Dr Bernard was also awarded the Best Presentation Award: 14th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding, an incredible international recognition from the pioneers and global leaders in FSW technology.

This achievement reflects far more than a conference presentation. It represents years of dedication, problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork from long hours on-site overcoming real-world production challenges to developing robust solutions that are now recognised on the global stage.

A special acknowledgement to Prof. Danie Hattingh for leading the research team in solid state welding at Nelson Mandela University over the past 25 years and to the entire eNtsa team whose commitment and expertise continue to push the boundaries of advanced manufacturing and welding technology.

Congratulations to Dr Bernard and the full team on this outstanding achievement!

Reflecting on two productive weeks of training delivered in Buffalo City Municipality (East London).

eNtsa, in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Tooling (IAT), successfully hosted a series of short technical training courses for participants from the automotive component sector and the academic community within this key Eastern Cape manufacturing region.

The programme focused on strengthening practical engineering capability through training in:
🔧 Welding Technology
⚙️ CNC Operation
🖨️ 3D Printing
📏 Engineering Measurement Tools

This initiative represents a strong partnership between Nelson Mandela University and Walter Sisulu University, contributing directly to a more resilient regional skills pipeline. The training supports Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, WSU lecturers, and WSU engineering students, building technical competence that feeds into the local manufacturing ecosystem.

Importantly, this work is made possible through the continued support of AIDC Eastern Cape, Technology Innovation Agency, and Department of Science,Technology and Innovation SA. Their investment enables high‑impact, practical interventions that strengthen industry, empower universities, and grow talent within the Eastern Cape.
