Coega Steels, established in 2014, is a leading South African steel-billets manufacturer and the first and only steel-melting unit in the Eastern Cape province. Its billets, produced from high-quality ferrous scrap at its state-of-the-art mini-mill in Gqeberha, are the product of choice for 75 rolling mills locally and internationally. Its team of 600 employees is projected to grow to over 800 in 2026 through strategic forward integration. Looking further ahead, the workforce is expected to expand to approximately 900 staffers as it expands into finished-product manufacturing for the domestic market. The Coega Steels workforce is at the heart of its sustainability strategy. Through the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, it strives to create a greener, cleaner and better future for staff and the local community. The mini-mill’s vision is to be the leading industrial enterprise in the province.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED | When Coega Steels plumbing assistant Faeez Connelly embarked on what would ultimately become the most important quest of his career, no one knew.

That is no one but his mom, whom he filled in and swore to secrecy.

The reason wasn't a sinister one. He simply wanted to avoid the weight of expectation, for, he says, if more people know, it creates more pressure.

After working as a layman for more than a decade, Faeez applied for, was selected and completed our Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) programme that set him on his way to earning his Red Seal certification as a qualified tradesman.

MAJOR COUP | Celebrating the official opening of our R360-million rolling mill with friends, colleagues and the media at our plant in Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday was a proud moment.

Read here how it forms part of a R500m total investment and benefits both Coega Steels and the province: https://tinyurl.com/CSrllmll

NEWS | Meet Faeez Connelly, a member of our in-house plumbing team, who has taken full advantage of our Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) programme to earn his Red Seal trade qualification.

It is the equivalent of NQF Level 5 credentials, proving the artisan is competent in his/her trade.

The initiative gives staff like Faeez - who has worked in the field for north of 10 years - the opportunity to formalise their experience and skills.

IT'S OFFICIAL | Coega Steels is incredibly proud of the latest cohort of Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) participants who are now well on track to qualify as formal artisans.

Ten staffers recently completed the year-long assessment that paves the way for employees to undergo a trade test for a Red Seal Certificate, the official documentation awarded to qualified artisans in South Africa.

Welding, electrifying and plumbing, among others, are considered scarce skills in SA and the ARPL is an important step in addressing this dearth.

Many Coega Steels employees arrive as general workers but become proficient in various tasks over time. This programme allows them to be recognised for those skills while giving them further opportunities to develop their career.

Huge congratulations to the following ARPL graduates: Sikho Jama (welding), Mzoxolo Gubevu (welding), Jody Christians (welding), Mthetheleli Majeke (welding), Mondeli Nyathela (mechanical fitter), Xolisa January (mechanical fitter), Ayanda Volibi (mechanical fitter), Faeez Connelly (plumbing), Noman Shaikh (mechanical fitter) and Jade Botha (mechanical fitter)

NEWS | If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting our receptionist, Nolufefe Mgoqi, you may want to give this piece a read for a wee lesson in humility and a generous serving of inspiration.

Besides being the "face" of our business, a wife and mom, Nolu is an eight-time Eastern Cape representative in the sport of Boccia.

Her husband Anele is what insiders call her "ramp assistant" and, despite having a disability of his own, they make one formidable team.

Their ability to conquer as a unit despite challenges is not only inspirational, but a lesson in what can be achieved if we stand together in the workplace.

DYK? | Green-steel production is NOT part of the illegal trade in metals.

The industry only makes use of iron-rich ferrous scrap like mild, stainless and wrought iron steels that are melted down in electric-arc or induction furnaces.

These materials are not among those pillaged by thieves and vandals who cost South Africa's economy an estimated R46-billion a year.

These criminals' stock-in-trade are primarily copper, aluminum, brass, lead, zinc, nickel and precious metals like gold and silver. These are sold to rogue dealers, who process it into unmarked raw materials before funnelling them back into local manufacturing or illegally exporting it.

Using scrap that fails to appeal to nefarious elements in not the only way the green-steel manufacturers reduce crime. They also work tirelessly to root out imposters.

The sector fights against what is known as “greenwashing”, where dodgy mini-mills make false claims about the environmental benefits of their products.

At Coega Steels, we believe in honesty, being kind to the environment and making our country safer for all.
