Khepri Biosciences

Khepri Biosciences We combine principles and technologies from a multitude of spheres including: industrial entomology, engineering, agriculture and biotechnology.

The South African government has been in the forefront when it comes to encouraging the manufacturing of green technologies, hence the country has had to find ways to reduce the emission of gases related to climate change. Piloting the process of re-using abattoir waste to produce low-cost animal feed, Khepri Bioscience is certainly seizing the opportunity to take advantage of the growth opportuni

ties in green economy. Founded by a determined young African entrepreneur in the bio-economy, Bandile Dlabantu, the biotechnology company seeks to solve problems within the agricultural, health and research sectors in a feasible way. According to an official press release, the company is contributing to lowering the price of farming animals and the price of food, thus improving food security, contributing to job creation as well as closing the gap between organic waste and farming.
“The company has developed unique technology for the onsite processing of organic waste produced by food manufacturers, abattoirs and the hospitality sector. This technology allows for the reduction of waste volumes by up to 90% and a decrease in waste management costs for the producer. This waste is used to rear insects which are then converted into low cost and high quality animal feed,” explains Dlabantu.

South African township community gardens are a vital source of fresh produce and community empowerment. With over 1,300 registered community gardens in Gauteng alone (Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2022), these initiatives have the potential to transform urban food systems. One innovative approach to support these gardens is the use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae in fertilizer production. BSF larvae can efficiently convert organic waste into a nutrient-rich fertilizer, ideal for community gardens. Taxi ranks, a hub of activity in townships, generate significant amounts of organic waste, including food waste and paper products. Harnessing this waste as a feedstock for BSF larvae could provide a sustainable and closed-loop fertilizer production system.

Onsite waste bioconversion with BSF offers a decentralized and community-driven solution, allowing taxi ranks and community gardens to process their own waste and produce fertilizer. This approach reduces waste management costs, creates jobs, and increases food security. Khepri.co.za, a pioneering organization, offers expertise and technology to establish and maintain BSF facilities, empowering communities to take control of their waste and fertilizer needs.
