Team AREND

Team AREND An international student team is designing a specially instrumented unmanned aircraft (UAV) that shall help Rangers fight Rhino poaching in South Africa.

For the final testing phase the contact information will be transferred to SA: [email protected] The project name AREND stands for “Aircraft for Rhino and ENvironmental Defense.” The word Arend is also Africaans for Eagle. GOAL of AREND
Conceive, Design, Implement & Operate a special remotely-piloted aircraft equipped with distinct sensors, embedded systems, and 3G/4G and TCIP communications

in a robust and high endurance aircraft meeting also acoustic and wilderness operation requirements. The aircraft has an electric propulsion system to satisfy one of the prime requirements of the concept of operations: quiet flight when poachers are detected. The multinational, multidisciplinary, vertically integrated engineering design team, is an established programme at the University of Pretoria in collaboration with local UAV industry. We have hosted interns from various programmes in the US, France, Germany and Norway. The team is composed of aerospace, mechanical, electrical, IT and computer engineers.
