The group’s objectives are to provide information, insights, perspectives and opinions on topics relating to the group, the South African mining industry and related fields. Exxaro Resources Limited (Exxaro, the company or the group) is among the top five coal producers in South Africa. Since 2006, Exxaro has become one of South Africa's largest and foremost black-empowered and diversified mining

Therefore, we have started incorporating renewable energy solutions into our existing portfolio to reach this milestone by 2050. To this end, Exxaro is pleased to announce the acquisition from Khopoli Investments Limited (Khopoli), wholly owned by Tata Power Company Limited (Tata), of Khopoli's 50% interest in Cennergi Proprietary Limited (Cennergi) for a cash consideration of R1 739 million (including price adjustments). News Alert 🔔 Exxaro opens New Mine 1 at Matla colliery - advancing energy security and extending the life of mine

This morning we officially opened its New Mine 1 operation at its Matla Coal Mine in Mpumalanga, marking another milestone in the organisation’s growth strategy to sustain production, enhance operational efficiency, and support South Africa’s energy security pipeline.

In 2016, the decision was taken to stop production at the old Mine 1 due to deteriorating safety pillars near the shaft infrastructure. This led to the development of the New Mine 1 project to safely access the remaining reserves and develop a life expansion pathway for Mine 1.

The New Mine 1 forms part of the broader Matla Life of Mine Project (MLOMP), a long-term, R5.236 billion mega investment project designed to provide safe and continued access to the remaining coal reserves, improve efficiency and ensure consistent delivery in line with the recently extended Coal Supply Agreement (CSA) with Eskom.

As a cost-plus operation, Eskom is contractually responsible for funding the mine’s costs to ensure the lowest possible overall fuel cost. The New Mine 1, which is critical to the reliable operation of Matla Power station will contribute approximately 4.2 million tonnes of coal annually, further underscoring Exxaro’s commitment to sustainable resource development and operational resilience in a challenging operating environment.

Matla Coal mine employs 6174 employees, including contractors.

Yesterday, we joined industry leaders, government representatives and mining professionals at the 2026 Coal Safe awards under the theme: “One Voice, One Sustainable Industry, One Sustainable Future.”

The event reinforced the importance of collective action across industry, government, labour and communities to build a mining sector that is safer, more responsible and sustainable for future generations.

During the opening SACMA President and General Manager of our Matla Mine, Mangaliso Sethethi Pr. Eng,MBA highlighted the critical role coal continues to play in supporting industries and communities, while emphasising that sustainable impact must be measurable. He reminded delegates that, “Every injury underground affects a family above ground,” reinforcing that safety extends far beyond the workplace.

Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting a safer and more inclusive mining industry, stating: “Mining people must go to work and come back safely.”

Our CEO, Ben Magara, delivered a powerful keynote address on leadership, resilience, ethics and the future of the coal industry. Reflecting on his own Coal Safe journey, he shared that 23 years ago he served as Chairman of Coal Safe. He reminded delegates that while industry conversations continue to evolve, one principle remains unchanged: “When safety is not right, nothing else is right.”

This Workers’ Day, we commemorate South Africa’s labour movement, celebrate workers' rights, and honour the role of trade unions and the working class in the fight the injustices of the past. We also recognise and celebrate the invaluable contribution of every individual who drives progress, not only within our organisation, but across the broader economy.

At Exxaro, the people across our value chain are at the core of our business. Every day, our employees go beyond the surface to power progress and enable development above ground. For 20 years, this commitment has defined our impact, and as we approach our 20-year milestone in November 2026, it is clear that this journey has been built through their contribution.

Our Sustainable Growth and Impact (SG&I) strategy places our employees at the centre of this progress. Through our focus on empowering people to create impact, and guided by our Employee Value Proposition (EVP), we are committed to creating an environment where they can grow, be recognised, and build meaningful careers.

This commitment is reflected in action:
